YAhoo Goes For a China Push

Everyone wants a piece of the China market..Yahoo is planning an aggressive push into China, where it has so far had limited success in the face of stiff competition from local portals such as Sina.com and Sohu.com.

Paid search services and online auctions are future key focal points…the company hasn’t had great success with its Chinese portal, Yahoo.com.cn, but recently paid $120 million for 3721 Network Software, which provides the technology for the popular search engine 3721.com.

In January, Yahoo also announced its online auction joint venture with Sina.com.

WSJ.com (sub. req.): Yahoo also hopes to attract Chinese to become paid subscribers for e-mail services, executives said. Yahoo currently has no Chinese subscribers, but in the rest of the world the company is drawing in new business at a fast clip, adding 900,000 new subscribers in the first quarter, to the five million at the end of 2003.
