Well, you’ve already read about AOL’s plans to start posting some of its content outside of its walls (read this)…
This is a desperation move, which if you ask people inside AOL, they wouldn’t deny it…I would brand it as too-late-too-little…
Here’s the thing: I doubt AOL would have any competitive advantage on content, due to this move. Content providers, who till now had been signing exclusive deals with AOL, would be foolish to sign these once AOL’s content comes out of the wall and on to the open Web.
Why would you, as a content provider, be restricted to AOL on the open Web? MLB has realized it earlier than anyone else and has signed non-exclusive deals with multiple distribution partners..that’s the way to go.
