In a strategy shift which close readers of this site would have seen coming (the whole unbundling debate etc..), AOL is planning to publish a growing portion of its news, sports, music and other content on the open Internet, making it available to any online user.
By placing what many analysts consider AOL’s top-flight programming on the Internet, executives say they can take advantage of a rebounding Web-advertising market.
AOL officials say they have not determined what content to move outside its walls. And they stressed that AOL will always save its best stuff for subscribers.
News.com: AOL slowly implementing new HTML-based publishing, that will allow it to do this…Already, areas such as personal finance and sports have converted, with others, including movies and entertainment, on the way. The conversions could pave the way for AOL to solicit more third-party partners to create more programming for inside and outside AOL’s fence.
