So now I understand..I wasn’t so sure what was so new about Prince’s new download music store, since he was doing that earlier as well…now I know why. Prince first made online music available to paying fans in February 2001 in an experiment that lasted about a year…I guess they had some DRM issues back then.
Now, Prince’s company thinks those issues are have been solved. Rather than entrust his latest songs to iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody or the other emerging leaders in the market, Prince’s New Power Generation (NPG) company partnered with digital content commerce company Entriq so that he could maintain complete control.
Entriq CEO Jan Steenkamp said his company secures the content, provides the infrastructure, handles the backend billing and supplies reporting information to Prince’s team. Encoding, hosting and processing are handled by NPG…
