So writes John Battelle today, in an interesting report on Topix.net, the new news search engine…Battelle hopes that a smaller company focused on news search might actually win the day, as opposed to the biggies such as Google, Yahoo and MSN…
CEO Rich Skrenta on why he’s bootstrapping the company, as opposed to getting funding: “After five minutes, every one of them would tell me their vision of what I had to do to win in the market,” he said. “If you take their money, you have to buy that vision.”
Better to fund it small, with angels and friends, writes Battelle, and let it grow to its own place in the sun. Could it be that the post-bubble web, version 2.0, will allow for such companies to succeed?
Sounds like I should probably stick to this advice as well, as I consider my expansion options…
