(sub. req.): DJ Newswires does a story on Waterfront Media, a company I wrote about early this month. The Brooklyn, New York, start-up, launched during January 2002, has created a revenue stream for book publishers through subscription-based, branded Web sites, and is backed by Bo Peabody, who during 1992 founded online community Tripod and later sold it to Lycos.
The idea for the newly relaunched company is to create subscription sites around books, specifically self-help and fitness books. In essence, online clubs around books…
Waterfront has had its biggest success with the South Beach Diet, a modified version of the Atkins diet that has topped national bestseller lists for months.
The company, which has about five new deals in the works, expects to introduce a product every two or three months, Mr. Peabody says. Revenue is expected to quadruple this year to about $30 million.
