Tech biggies Nokia, Philips, Universal Studios Networks Germany and Vodafone’s research division are teaming up to introduce digital TV broadcasts on portable devices. The Philips-Universal-Vodafone-Nokia service is being tested in Berlin and will provide digital multimedia services for laptops, PC tablets, car devices and TV sets.
RCR Wireless: Launched in August, the bmco pilot project combines GPRS wireless networks and digital terrestrial broadcast networks, including DVB-T and the emerging DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcast Handheld) standard. The companies said the technology uses “time-slicing” techniques to send data in bursts, thus extending battery life.
