Jeff, here’s your rudimentary subscription consolidator…AOL is launching a new service called AOL Bill Pay that lets its subscribers pay nearly all their bills directly through its proprietary e-mail service, such as e-mail alerts that track cellphone usage and credit-card balances.
The company struck a partnership with Yodlee, a technology company that helps aggregate bills from vendors as diverse as Verizon to American Express, to provide the guts of the service.
But what it hopes will lure subscribers are the safety features built into its mailbox, where reminders and links to bills will be sent.
WSJ.com (sub. req.): AOL plans to heavily promote the new service, which will remain free for users. Down the road, the company may charge billers for better positioning within the service, and may sell the right to send authenticated marketing e-mails to users who opt in.
