The Special Problem of Digital Intellectual Property

DRM Watch points to a 81-page PDF report released by Committee for Economic Development (CED), a Washington-based business think tank. The report, titled “Promoting Innovation and Economic Growth: The Special Problem of Digital Intellectual Property” is the most balanced and pragmatic statement on the problems of digital IP, piracy, and DRM to come out in some time, according to Bill Rosenblatt.

Billboard: Well, Billboard editor-in-chief Keith Girard doesn’t like the report: “For one, the study assumes that just because illegal file sharing is possible, it should be considered viable. Since it exists in conflict with copyright law, it’s the law, not the technology, that needs to be re-examined…Secondly, the study assumes that any attempt to regulate file sharing could theoretically threaten innovation and therefore economic development. But what about the economic development and innovation that file sharing has already put at risk in a real and tangible way?”
