The streaming media patent controversy surrounding Acacia has claimed its first mainstream victim: Walt Disney. Acacia, a little known holding company which has some key streaming media patents, has been causing a lot of pain in the adult streaming industry till now, with demands for licensing fee and ongoing litigations on patent infringement, but this is the first time a mainstream media firm has licensed Acacia’s technology.
The license includes the Walt Disney Internet Group which operates the Disney, ESPN, and ABCNews websites. Acacia has now entered into 116 license agreements for its technology with companies in the hotel in-room entertainment, e-learning, and online music, movie, sports, news, information, and adult entertainment industries.
Expect the likes of RealNetworks and other broadband content players to fall into line soon…patent terrorism at its best.
