Mobile operators are like Microsoft: all content operators hate them to death. Content owners struck out at the mobile industry at 3GSM on Wednesday, saying that their charging models, telephone specifications and DRM need to be severely overhauled before they can count on getting significant revenues from mobile content.
Mitch Lazar, VP of wireless and emerging technology for Turner Broadcasting System International said on a panel that operators needed to model themselves more on traditional broadcasters, who figured out how to do advertising, distribution and licensing effectively.
And then, a dose of reality: According to Ovum, the market for wireless digital content services is currently only growing at about 4%. “Content is still a very, very small piece of the pie today,” said Lazar. “Everyone thinks the market is much bigger than it really is.”
