CNN International, the international channel of CNN, will be streamed live on mobile phones in Austria, starting March. The company has closed a deal with telecom operator mobilkom austria to stream it live on the new Nokia 7600 handsets. The technology for streaming was developed by Yard Broadcast Network, a startup based out of Ireland.
This is the first channel to be added to mobilkom’s A1 mobile network and more will be added in the near future, according to the companies.
This is the first such deal for streaming CNN on mobiles…other channels such as CNBC have been trying it in various countries, though it seems most are focusing on clips, rather than live streaming. And for good reason: go to YBN’s website and click on the demo, and notice the quality of the video: feels like the early early days of the Web, doesn’t it?
In addition to the live TV option, the service will also have on-demand streaming of selected programs.
On A1 network, it will be delivered using a UMTS network…Although UMTS with its high bandwidth is the ideal carrier technology for A1 TV, according to the company, several GPRS mobiles are also capable of using the new service, using RealPlayer for mobiles.
And the cost, you ask? Mobilkom Austria has a special free trial period…nothing on how much it will cost after that…
