Reed’s highly lucrative scientific publishing empire, which has a tradition stretching back to 1580, is under threat from the growth of a new system of publishing on the internet known as open access.
Until now Reed has dismissed open access as an unsustainable business model which at its heart risks becoming mere vanity publishing. But in academic circles the move towards paid-for publication and free access is gaining speed.
