Akimbo, a new company launching today, has launched an IP TV service, centered around the TV rather than the PC. To use the Akimbo service, you connect the $199 Akimbo box to your home entertainment center. You also plug it into your cable or DSL connection, and it gets its content over the Net. But not in real time: Akimbo downloads your programming for later viewing, explain Rafe Needleman in his column. For $9.99 per month, plus additional premium options, users will be able to download up to 200 hours of content at a time onto the box.
Initial content will include a lot of ‘specialty’ video–foreign films, educational content, sports events that aren’t available on satellite or cable, and adult content. The company is also partnering with CinemaNow for movie distribution. For more details on its new content providers, read the company release…
Akimbo will begin sales online through its own Web site and those of content partners in the second quarter and is expected to hit retail outlets by the holiday season, reports Variety (sub. req.).
