Intel scientists say that they have made silicon chips that can switch light like electricity, blurring the line between computing and communications and bringing sweeping changes to the way digital information and entertainment are delivered.
Besides all the technology gobblydook which I can’t understand, the story says the invention will also make possible a new class of computing applications based on the possibility of transmitting high-definition video and images hundreds or even thousands of times faster than possible on today’s Internet.
One potential application would be an interactive digital television system allowing viewers to watch a sports event from several angles, moving the point-of-view at will while the game is being played.
If you’re interested, a copy of the paper and more information about Intel’s silicon photonics research can be found at Intel’s website here.
