The UK arm of MSN is halting the sale of pop-up ads, and has pledged to phase out pop-under formats by the summer. The announcement doesn’t include rich-media over-the-page creative.
The ban will be across all of MSN’s global businesses, taking immediate effect in the UK, Nordic regions and Belgium. Pop-up and pop-under ads were blocked from MSN US at the end of last year.
Rival Yahoo has no plans to block pop-ups, but claimed that the number of requests for interruptive ad formats has fallen significantly in the past 18 months. AOL has blocked pop-up advertising from its US portal, but is continuing to serve them in the UK.
