Will MSFT Reconcile With Apple on Music Downloads?

This is a vaporware story, if you ask me. Yeah, everybody wants to see interoperability happen in the music business…but it is not going to happen anytime soon. Somebody was telling me at MIDEM last week that France might become the first country in the world to introduce legislation forcing the digital music players to have interoperability. Again, that’s speculation…

The Billboard story posits that many traditional adversaries–including MSFT and Apple–are engaged in private talks aimed at meeting the music industry’s goal of compatibility among competing digital music devices by 2005. Executives with knowledge of the talks say much of the focus is on transcoding — the process of converting a file from one format to another.

Again, wake me up from sleep when that happens…
