UK online publishers show optimism for 2004, according to a latest member survey by AOP…the survey results, though thin on numbers, show an increased willingness of publishers to develop diverse revenue streams.
Regarding revenue models among members of AOP and PPAInteractive (about 130 in total), which represent the biggest media companies in UK, display advertising remains the most important source forming 43 per cent of all revenue. The next most important source is paid for content at 13 per cent. The study found that 58 per cent of organisations currently charge for online content. Of those that do not, about half plan to charge in the next 12 months, which will bring the proportion of those charging to 82 per cent.
Of the members who reported their revenues, the range of the turnover varies enormously, from non-commercial organisations that stated that the value of turnover was zero, to a turnover level of £350m per year. The median level of turnover is between £1.1m and £2m, compared to £500,000 in 2003.
