MusicMatch and Coca-Cola Partner on Digital Music

OK, so I’ll bite…I am convinced that Coca-Cola will ultimately buy MusicMatch…my speculative contribution to the betterment of the soda fizz industry…

Coca-Cola North America has struck some sort of deal with online music/jukebox service MusicMatch, though the exact details of the partnership will be revealed later…

Right now, this much is known: Coca-Cola’s brand Sprite will get into a partnership with MusicMatch. That’s it. This is the amount of obfuscation Coca-Cola is indulging in right now: “The Sprite brand has a long history with music, and we believe our partnership with MusicMatch is a great way to bring personalized digital music to U.S. consumers in new and innovative ways,” said Geoff Cottrill, group director, Music, Entertainment Marketing Group, Coca-Cola North America. Methinks they’re just trying to do a me-too announcement to counter Pepsi’s deal with iTunes and upcoming SuperBowl ads…

The Sprite-MusicMatch deal may be something on the lines of what Coke is doing in U.K, where it will be giving away 20 million free downloads through specially marked Coke cans…that will be done through its new myCokeMusic.com site, which launched in UK last week…)

Update: LA Times has some details on the partnership: Geoff Cottrill, who directs the music marketing group for Coca-Cola North America, said the promotion would feature the Sprite lemon-lime soda and was expected to let customers download individual songs free and give them some access to MusicMatch
