Think of this as the mini “iTunization” of the movie business…America Online will launch a promotion Wednesday that lets its members download full-feature films through Movielink for 99 cents a title…The promotion will last until Feb. 26, although both companies do not have specific plans to extend beyond that..it will also be limited to about 10 big-studio releases from the past year, including “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Terminator 3.”
WSJ (sub. req.): The promotion is structured as a co-marketing arrangement, with Movielink taking a loss on each download in the hope of attracting new customers who may buy other movies at full price.
In separate news, Movielink will announce a partnership on Wednesday with Ball State University to form a research lab within the school’s Center for Media Design. It will be charged with studying the online habits of college students as it relates to films and piracy.
