Michael Pousti, CEO of mobile company SMS.ac, never one to mince his words, said that the mobile data market will exceed $100bn in five years, speaking at the 3G Mobile World Forum in Tokyo this week.
However, his most contentious remarks were reserved for the Internet. “The World Wide Web, as a revolutionary phenomenon that could change the world, never really had a chance,” he said. “The business model was flawed. Consumers didn’t pay for what they consumed – in fact, people couldn’t pay for what they consumed because the payment mechanism didn’t exist.”
“Downloading a java game so I can burn some time playing against myself or the machine is a ludicrous long-term business model. Are you trying to be Gameboy? That’s a war that’s over.”
