Reed Elsevier: Lightning Rod for Open Access Debate

The latest edition of Outsell Inc‘s weekly newsletter has another good item: “The faculty and staff of North Carolina State University have passed a resolution opposing content bundling practices and authorizing the library not to renew a bundled content contract with Elsevier, currently worth about $1.4 million. NC joins Cornell, Harvard, and the University of California as major research institutions in open conflict with Elsevier. What’s unique at NCSU is that it’s not just a library in revolt; the faculty fully supports the library and unanimously passed the resolution. From a collection of disjointed, pie-in-the-sky initiatives, the Open Access movement is consolidating into a serious force backed by major research universities and institutions worldwide. It’s here to stay.
