It’s official: (by guest blogger Staci D. Kramer) At noon PST Tuesday, MP3.com converted from a functioning Web site to a billboard for CNET Networks’ “next generation digital music information service.” That description is courtesy of Vince Broady, senior vice president – entertainment, whose message now fills the page. Users can sign up for updates or visit CNET’s Digital Music Center. Artists who relied on MP3.com for fhrie promotion will have to wait until early next year when music.download.com launches “new and improved artist services.” In the meantime, CNET is trying to maintain some sense of community by offering forums. Oddly, it looked like business as usual at MP3.com in the minutes leading up to the switch from VUNet USA to CNET — not even an obvious warning — although MP3.com subscribers got multiple reminders by e-mail. Even so, some time-challenged users were caught off guard when they confused 12 p.m. for midnight instead of noon.
