Online News Honors

(by Staci Kramer, guest blogging the ONA conference from Evanston, Ill): Five years ago nearly two dozen journalists gathered at the O’Hare Hilton for the first meeting of what became the Online News Association. This weekend nearly 300 gathered for the group’s fourth annual conference and awards. Honored for General Excellence in Online Journalism: GothamGazette.Com (under 200,000 independent); CQ.com (affiliated); BeliefNet.com (200,000+ independent); and ESPN.com (200,000+ affiliated). The breadth of the top sites — the online incarnation of a 106-year-old organization, the translation of 50-plus years of in-depth knowledge of how government works; a pure creation of the Internet and a sports megalith — points to the potential and the reality of online content. Other honorees included NYTimes.com for breaking news coverage of the war in Iraq; Space.com for breaking news coverage of the space shuttle Columbia; and Salon.com for feature journalism (independent). … ONA’s new officers: Doug Feaver, WashingtonPost.com, president; Ruth Gersh, AP Digital, vice president; Kinsey Wilson, USAToday.com, treasurer. … Check out ONA’s group blog.
