CanWest Outlines New Online Strategy

CanWest, which owns Canada’s biggest newspaper chain and the canada.com website, has provided more details of its previously-announced plan to charge for access to some of its online news and information content.

Online content will soon be provided through four levels of access. Basic content on its canada.com site will remain free. The second level of access will provide “premium services, including access to columnists and opinion pieces, search capabilities and archives”, but will be available only to subscribers to CanWest newspapers. There will be no additional charge. The third tier gives customers full access to CanWest newspaper content along with a 7-day searchable archive.

The fourth level of access, which won’t be available until next year, will also provide paid access to multi-media news and information content from CanWest’s network of TV stations.
