AOL Buys Select Viewpoint Technology For $10 Million

Seems like an effective buyout of the company: America Online has entered into a agreement with Viewpoint, which develops online visual display technologies, under which it gains control of a source code license and permanent rights to certain Viewpoint technologies.

AOL will pay Viewpoint Corporation $9 million to license the Viewpoint Platform and at least $1 million for services to be provided by Viewpoint.

These technologies will be integrated into the new AOL 9.0 Optimized.

Viewpoint Platform helps in the creation rich media apps which integrated easily with all kinds of audio and video online. In AOL 9.0 Optimized, the Viewpoint Platform is being used in SuperBuddy icons, AOL Instant Greetings, customizable desktop themes, and the KOL kids service.

On a related note, this is the second such public deal AOL has done this year on enhancing its new versions: it bought out the assets of InfoGate in March.
