In a significant move, Japan’s second largest telecoms operator KDDI will introduce a flat rate next month for packet transmission of email and Internet content for its mobile phone service. This will apply to its 3G services.
FT: The initiative surprised the industry, which has been wary of offering flat-rate services because of the strain on the limited amount of spectrum available.
KDDI’s move brings a new business model to the mobile phone industry. For example, one of the services KDDI will offer is the downloading of live video that can be stored in the phone for viewing later.
