UK Telecom operator MMO2, BT Group’s former mobile arm, is set to become one of the first of the leading mobile operators to sell chart music downloads on to mobile phones following a deal with five of the music industry’s big labels including Universal and EMI.
MMO2 is expected to charge upwards of £1.50 ($2.50) a song. MMO2 users will be able to transfer downloaded songs from a mobile phone to a PC and even burn tracks on to CDs. But unique encryption technology will prevent illegal file-sharing.
