CanWest Will Launch Premium Versions in November

(via Online-News list) CanWest Global Communications, the Canadian national newspaper chain, will close off its newspapers sites in November, and will turn them into subscription based sites. CanWest owns 10 major metropolitan newspapers in Canada in addition to the flagship National Post.

Much of the content is now offered free on its www.canada.com site. “There’s no point in having canada.com with 120 million pageviews a month if nobody is paying for it. If we lose the pageviews fine. But either way people are going to start to have to pay for newspapers,” he said. “At the very least we’ll stop the cannibalization I think.”
