Virgin UK Launches Music Download Service

Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group has become the latest company to take decisive action to address plummeting single sales by pledging to sell new tracks online from as little as 60p (~95 cents) and make songs available on the web weeks before their release in the shops. The music shop is here.

Virgin has joined forces with OD2, the digital music company formed by former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel. Virgin will make tracks from all its top artists, along with those from other major labels that have signed deals with OD2, available on the web on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Reuters: The per song price is “undercutting by 20 percent the next cheapest rivals, Microsoft Corp’s MSN and European Internet service provider Tiscali.”
