Dis*Content: Ubiquitous Music Analyst Starts His Own Firm

(this is a new series of insider happenings in the industry: as they call it in journalistic parlance, reliable, yet unverified).

Phil Leigh, the ubiquitous digital media (mainly music) analyst with Raymond James, has left the firm after six years and has started his independent research firm, called Inside Digital Media. The name is derived from his regular audio show on ON24, also by the same name. (he was quoted in a Wired story today, with his new firm’s name)

Some arcane bit of history here: right when Webnoize (the digital music research firm) went out of business in late 2001, Leigh rose in prominence as he replaced the then heavily quoted analyst Ric Dube. Every journalist was sick of quoting Jupiter analysts anyway, and the Forrester analyst (what was his name?) was AWOL. Leigh filled that space and has been quoted extensively with the resurgence in online music business activity (just look at the Google News results).

Anyway, funnily enough, Paul Resnikoff, the current head of Lycos’ U.S. Digital Music Group, owns the InsideDigitalMedia.com URL (he has also been interviewed on Leigh’s show before)…Resnikoff has a side business called Mint Modern Media, which is a web development business for music firms, mainly. Is he in on Leigh’s new firm? (he is still working at Lycos, according to the PR firm). I e-mailed both Leigh and Resnikoff this morning, and haven’t heard back from them…more when I get some responses from them…
