Subscribers Flock to 3G Premium Service; Or Do They?

Funny this: While the Guardian story spins a positive angle on the number of 3 subscribers; others like NetImperative and BrandRepublic paint it as a disaster…who do you believe? I suspect it is the latter one…

Here’s the Guardian story: The UK telecom operator 3, which recently launched a new service that enables people to make video-phone calls and watch highlights of Premier League football matches on their handsets, has been attracting new subscribers at the rate of more than 10,000 a week. It has attracted around 155,000 UK subscribers since its launch in March.

3 has already signed deals with Big Brother producer Endemol and Heat owner Emap to provide video content for the service. Emap is working on a shortened version of its Smash Hits Chartshow for 3, while Endemol’s comedy arm Zeppetron is putting together comedy projects.

Here’s the NetImperative version: 3 UK’s target of attracting one million customers by the end of 2003 appears unreachable after the operator said it has only managed to sign up 155,000 customers.
