RealNetworks has unveiled “RealOne for SprintPCS”, its first streaming media service to wireless phones…the service will provide news, sports and entertainment audio as well as slide shows with some bulletins, from content providers such as Sporting News Radio, ABC News, Fox Sports, The Weather Channel and NPR.
As a standalone feature, RealOne will cost $4.95 per month, over and above the Sprint PCS data fee. To promote the RealOne for SprintPCS, Sprint will step up with in-store marketing in its Sprint PCS retail stores and at Radio Shack, Best Buy and Circuit City.
Seattle Times: One analyst, Seamus McAteer at the Zelos Group, estimates it could bring in a few million dollars [for RealNetworks] in the next year, pocket change for a company that had sales of $182.7 million in 2002…If nothing else, the service is one step toward a larger goal at RealNetworks.
