According to the story, AOL seems to have no strategy for attracting new customers who might pay for premium services by sampling AOL’s wares on the Web, but otherwise aren’t willing to install its hefty proprietary client. Its portal now seems mostly oriented toward AOL members, who can use it for tasks such as checking their e-mail. The Netscape portal, which AOL owns, also seems to be withering.
