(We are running analysis of the event from Jacob Kaldenbaugh, founder of Harvest Equity Research, an independent digital media research firm) Its apparent that what’s really holding back online music are players’ egos and the tensions between labels, artists, retailers and radio channels. I think [Joshua Matthew Dern, Vice President of New Media, Atlantic Records]’s comment that there is an established structure that works(ed) and a lot of individuals are comfortable in it. He also made an interesting comment that his department (digital delivery within EMI) didn’t really get much attention until a big number of big-name artists started demanding the services from their labels. The sub-note to this is that most of the artist demand was driven by Apple’s iTunes launch. Is this a case of Apple once again flipping a switch to a powerplant that Microsoft will own?
