Not sure why this is being passed off as news, as RealNetworks’ OpenPass has been around for a while. Anyway, OpenPass is a service designed to allow media companies to build their own subscription programs on RealNetworks technology. It is an ASP content commerce solution, like a lot of others out there.
The company has lined up 21 content providers, including Motor Trend and Sporting News Radio. But one partner in particular marks a new turn for the company ? Playboy.
The broadband service will be called the Playboy TV Club and feature programming from the Playboy television network for a $24.95 monthly fee. The story characterizes this as RealNetworks’ imminent entry into adult subscription services, though of course RNWK is only selling technology to the company.
