Breaking: AT&T Launches Pre-Paid Content Card

AT&T has jumped into the nascent pre-paid content card market (Duocash has a similar technology, enabling calling cards to be used for online content purchase). It has launched AT&T PrePaid Web Cents Service, an alternative way to pay for online content, aimed typically at kids and travellers.

Content providers such as Cellus USA, Disney Online, Shockwave.com GameBlast and Vindigo have joined the service. Consumers will start seeing select specialty cards today in some participating outlets of the PRE Solutions, Retail Partner Network, Speedway SuperAmerica and Uni-Marts.  By the end of April, cards will be available in some 4,000 retail stores across the country, and many additional retail stores will be added in the coming months, according to the company.

Content companies can co-brand their cards, such as the one being offered by Vindigo, called Vindigo 2.0 Subscription Cards. These cards can be offered in weekly, monthly or yearly subscription denominations.

Read an interview I have just done with Mike Palumbo, sales director of AT&T pre-paid services, on the details of the product.
