A story on how fantasy sports has become a big revenue churner for online sports sites, and a good overview on all the major players in the market. “One of the best examples of a site that has shifted its users from free to paid services is The Sporting News Online, the online division of the sports publication owned by Vulcan Ventures, controlled by Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft. In 2001, The Sporting News Web site, which had always charged for fantasy sports services, acquired one of the more popular free fantasy sports sites, Smallworld Sports…That helped generate “several million dollars” in sports fantasy revenues last year, he said, up from about $250,000 in 2001.”
