CBS Classic: How to Buy a Dot-Com

An analysis following CBS’s decision to license college sports website out to Sportline. The story of how CBS slowly absorbed SportsLine for nothing will go down in dot-com lore as one of the best deals for the media company, and not such a good deal for SportsLine.

CBS is now on the way to becoming the majority owner of SportsLine.com now that a major hurdle is out of the way. That’s set to happen in April, when SportsLine will have to issue another $20 million in its shares to CBS as part of a longstanding contract signed in 1997 and renewed in 1999.
