Two wireless companies AvantGo (in the process of being acquired by Sybase) and Vindigo have received two separate patents related to the delivery of wireless content/data services. Avantgo’s patent will cover its methodology for off-line viewing of web pages or “channels” of content, that enable companies to deliver mobile applications in an “always-available mode”. It will include the synchronization of content, the definition of channels and the viewing of content for XML-based web services, applications and data for applications where field data and transaction integrity are critical.
Meanwhile, Vindigo’s U.S. Patent No. 6,480,785, titled, “System For Determining a Route and Presenting Navigational Instructions Therefor,” describes a new process designed to quickly and efficiently compute directions to places including the nearest ATM or gas station, specific theaters and restaurants, and other places to eat, shop and play. Related technologies require large, heavy hardware, while Vindigo’s innovation has proven effective for compact datasets on devices with limited computational power.
