In a struggle to monetize, it's no surprise that YouTube would reverse their decision on pre-roll. However, it's my hope that as the industry matures, someone figures out how to incorporate video advertising in a more user-friendly way (not as "repurposed TV ads").

I wouldn't be surprised if the future holds paid ad-free versions of YouTube, Hulu, etc. when watching TV, movies and videos online is just a way of life for everyone, not just those with smartphones and people who sit in front of a computer all day. I would pay for an ad free site. Inf fact, I already do, it's called Netflix.

Interesting; and this is after Google (and let's face it, it's not youtube) tried to convince everyone pre-roll was dead. Hmmm, do no evil?

It'll be interesting to see if they do that only on their platform, of if they do it for embedded videos as well.

If they do start putting it on embedded video's that'll really suck and I suspect create a market for other solutions I suspect.

I would guess that 90% of the time I skip the video when I see a pre-roll ad. If it's user generated content, that percentage will go even higher because it's less likely that I'll enjoy the clip. I wouldn't mind a system where YouTube slips in an ad after I've watched X number of minutes of content that day, but if they plan to do this by video, then it will mean that I watch a lot less clips that I otherwise would have experimented on.
