Weekend Vid Picks: Let’s Talk About MTV’s The Hills
First I didn’t know about the Jonas Brothers. Then The Hills started dominating Google Trends. Does one have to watch MTV in order to write about online trends? The longer I do this, the more likely that seems.
The Aug. 18th premiere of its fourth season (FOURTH, people — teenagers have already watched THREE YEARS of this series) has meant a resurgence of Hills spoofs — this one from the queen of the medium herself, LisaNova.
But all the parodies in the world don’t make up for the fact that this show is so popular, Spencer gets paid $100,000 to go to clubs. He in fact “will not go out for less.” David Letterman and I are completely befuddled by this.
And Spencer’s not the only one raking it in — everyone on the cast is handsomely paid for each episode, according to TV Guide.
And for what, for living a vaguely staged version of their fabulous lives on basic cable? Finally, a new standard for lowest common denominator television, which goes along nicely with a new standard for lowest common denominator pop music, defined in this instance by Heidi Montag’s first single, Overdosin’.
Final conclusion? Even if it means I’m reduced to Wikipedia-ing every single reference that goes over my head, my life is still better off MTV-free.

oh yes, excellent conclusion. as a pop culture blogger, ignoring popular and important pop cultural phenomena must be extremely enriching and fruitful. hey, it gives you an opportunity to write posts like this!
sorry, this is more rude than i would like to be, but seriously.
Justin, the sad thing is that I half-agree with you. Does it help that I’m all caught up on Lost? Well, probably not.
