I am very interested in this as I was trying to do the same thing so I did some digging around and it turns out that a company called http://www.mobilecdn.com are doing all the streaming for this application.

Now I understand why it is scalable which was the bigger challenge for me.

Great app and thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Joost does not delivery live video to the iPhone – anyone can do on demand on the iPhone. The live part for NBA is a really big deal!
