YouTube is still pretty much the lowest resolution video site, and the way they pick your thumbnail out of the middle frame of your timeline is a total hindrance to the cream rising to the top of the crop.

Also, it gives the video uploaders much more room to show off their work: larger resolution, larger description text that is not truncated, and a less cluttered interface.

So in addition to being viral, it also doesn’t have a bad UI holding it back. YouTube succeeded despite its clunky interface.
