The quote in the shaded box above was from Steve Effros. The exact quote from the February 12, 2006, Chicago Tribune article is as follows:

“Another Washington lawyer and cable TV analyst, Steve Effros, said of VDC’s FCC gambit: ‘It’s cute, but I don’t think anybody is going to take this terribly seriously. If they did, the FCC would collapse. Everybody could claim they were a cable system.’”

Seriously, this is cool. I hope it happens. But it also points toward the near-term probability that all this online video will overwhelm US broadband capacity. What we need is more investment in fiber to the home — universal broadband.

But I guess in this case, it might be rather difficult for a typical cable channel to offer VDC the redistribution rights. fashion.tv and NASA do not have a problem with that, because they own all their content. TMC and Cartoon Network might be possible. CNN: I seriously doubt that they own all the rights to stream their stuff.
