It sounds like it’s using the sensor like a fax single-row scanner head, combined with the optical stabilizer. A far better solution would have been to use classic edge matching and stitching on a group of sequential portrait mode shots.

Typical of Sony though, if I’ve guessed right. Bursts of brilliant hardware handicapped by idiosyncratic software.
