Don't forget about the recent Coors Light ads created much along the lines of the Rayban sunglasses (“is that real??”).

http://youtube.com/watch?v=TSQD8Lk3ies

We see many of these distributed through us at TubeMogul. What is interesting to us is how similar they are to blog posts that are purposefully controversial to generate comments and fuel debate. If you look at the comments on the Coors Light videos (or Rayban's and its ilk), you see that many are people showing off their viral marketing detectors and how they know it's a fake. In the end, I think that people that are upset are not angry that there are viral ads polluting their viewing community so much as they are mad at themselves for being entertained by such ads. Perhaps if these videos were disclosed as ads from the outset, the whole game around spotting them would go away and we could just enjoy the videos.

I don't see it as being lied to as much as enabling people to produce any content that they'd like too. There are some people out there that want to protect their prestige and ego, but still enjoy the cheesy B flick. The internet allows them to make an alter-ego and achieve anything that they set out to do.
