Pioneer’s Kuro Killing: A Tipping Point in the Plasma Era
The end of the Pioneer Kuro line of TVs represented a true tipping point in the TV industry, one preceded by long-gestating momentum from opposing forces. The recession and LCDs tipped over plasmas for good, and the slope downward will be quite steep, and fast.
Last week, Pioneer announced it was killing off its critically acclaimed TV business by March 2010 and will concentrate on car and audio/visual systems. It was a dramatic fall for a company that just one year ago had CES abuzz with its newest plasma TV, the so-called “Ultimate Black” Kuro.
The Kuro’s tech was impressive because it reduced light emissions from black areas of the screen to such a degree that at its maximum brightness, the contrast ratio was “almost infinite.” The result was a plasma display with the most vibrant, colorful images yet.
But even at the hype’s peak, problems in the plasma industry were apparent.
Plasmas were at their most popular from 2004 to 2006, a period that saw them overtake rear-projection TVs as the top big-TV format. But they had a tough time offsetting their lowest average prices with high sale volumes. The spectre of LCDs also prompted many customers to hold off on making a purchase. By February ’08, soon after the recession had officially taken hold, premium-quality Pioneers seemed out of touch. Most critically, LCDs were sporting features long the domain of plasma: bigger screens, greater contrast ratios, thinner and cheaper sets. LCD picture quality still failed to reach plasma levels, but to average consumers, the difference was no longer obvious.
Fast-forward to the start of 2009, and LCDs were outselling plasmas 8-to-1 globally, and the dominating the best-selling lists on Amazon.com.
Pioneer tried a last-ditch partnership with Panasonic to create a version of its plasma TVs, contributing its own “secret sauce” to keep the Kuro tech flowing, but that effort appears to be over.
The slumping demand is already having consequences: Projected losses of $1.41 billion in 2008-09 (following a loss of $203 million in 2007-08) and a nearly 50 percent drop in operating revenue have set the scene for 10,000 jobs cuts and the closing of U.S., UK and Japanese facilities. But Pioneer’s not the only TV maker suffering. They’re all taking it on the chin, regardless of display type.
Both Hitachi andVizio had to end the bleeding by shuttering plasmas to concentrate on LCDs. And not even the usually flush holiday period buoyed TV companies to a safe financial landing: Sony, Panasonic, and LG all posted lower quarterly profits.
Component suppliers have similarly been unable to escape the pain. As Om noted in recent posts, screen manufacturer Corning posted fourth-quarter 2008 revenues of $1.1 billion and still had to let go of 3,500 jobs.
Pioneer’s decision to end its plasma production was more complicated. It bought out NEC’s plasma business in 2004, used it as an OEM for its glass, but was recently forced to shutter the unit. Now, the only plasma manufacturers left standing are Panasonic, LG, and Samsung, all of which make their own components.
Panasonic is in good position to benefit from Kuro’s death. Most of the Pioneer engineers who came up with Kuro switched sides and are now working for Panasonic. In addition, recent demos have shown that Panasonic plasmas are nearing Kuro quality. Already in possession of the biggest plasma market share in the world (at more than 35 percent), the company will be able to build a diversified product line using plasma TVs as a premium screen type that appeals to a niche that still wants them. Add to that the fact that it receives significant revenues from selling its glass to other companies, including JVC and Fujitsu, and it appears that it’ll be able to keep plasmas afloat longer than any other company. Panasonic will inherit the burdens of the difficult economy and the LCD challenge, but once plasma is no longer economically feasible, its own LCDs will have likely caught up in picture quality. In fact, ultimate black contrast tech is already getting closer to LCDs. So it’s only a matter of a few years (maybe even less) before plasmas finally die out.
As for Pioneer, not all is lost. Reps say that the plasma TVs only accounted for 14 percent of its business worldwide, and patents for the Kuro technology will provide a profit for awhile. But any positives are bittersweet. The legacy of the Kuro TV will be that it was another best-in-class technology that was humbled by the force of the economy and the competitive market.

Well I’m glad I got my Kuro when I did, it is truly the best TV on the market today and will likely remain untouched for several years. LCD just can’t touch this set!
Bad news! Plasma is much better than LCD. My Pansonic Plasma rocks. Say it ain’t so Joe….
Only mis informed buyers think LCD tech has eclipsed Plasma tech. Plasma is still Much much better in Response time for Sports, Gaming, Fast action movies etc. Its so fast they cant even measure the response time.
Its half life is about 12 years+ watching it 8 hours a day. That just means it will be half as bright. But who watches them at full brightness? No one. So in 12 years you just up the brightness.
I sold my old 32 in Panisonic Plasma and bought a 52 in LCD Sony XBR5 last year. When watching Sports I wish i had my plasma back. Plasma was also better with the Blacks. For the informed Plsama still is best if you ask me.
For those who think you will keep a TV for 50 years after you buy it then maybe LCD is for you.
I wish I had bought a Bigger Plasma instead of the Sony LCD.
Other then Burn in LCD has no edge on Plasma. And the Newer Plasmas have features to minimize it.
As far as smaller TV’s i see the LCD being the only choice as Plasma rarely are found anymore smaller then 42in.
From someone who has owned top shelf LCD and Plasma TV’s I would Buy Plasma if I had it to do over again.
The only reason this all is happening is because no one is buying products. Most Americans already have purchased their electronics and until they break, it is pointless for them to make another purchase. It’s not a sale boom like when the LCDs and Plasma’s came out in 2004 and 2005 and these were the biggest changes to TV so people have what they need. Again, the production is useless because NO ONE IS BUYING ANYTHING!!!
LOL! Plasma dying out? Does the author own stock in the companies that mine LCD resources? :-) I’m sorry, but this article is just pretty silly.
I love my 42 inch Vizio Plazma. I love it. I’m never getting rid of it. Well……let me take that back….there are quite a few good looking models out there!!
what a shame, Plasma is and will always be better than LCD. LCDs are lower quality and thus cheaper to make and cheaper to buy….
That’s sad to hear because my Panasonic 50″ plasma rocks. The colors to me are more vibrant than an LCD and the plasma was a better price. I hope that plasma can make a come back because I would definitly buy a plasma again. The risk of the burn in is the only problem but just don’t leave the TV on pause for too long and problem solved.
Plasma’s going away is like 4×4 for vehicles. Why would any manufacturer get rid of such a superior technology that best represents sports, gaming and movie viewers? Bottom line, it’s just about pricing and demand. Spend some money to get the money. The lower prices on Plasma go, the more interested consumers are willing to upgrade to the best High Def TV available!!!!!!!!! Folks, that is why it is a little more expensive!
Wow – Sad really. I still prefer my Vizio Plasma to LCD’s. Price to Performance ratio is unmatched
I think that liquid crystal vs plasma was similar to the blu-ray vs hi-def competition, it just took longer. Both the LCD and plasma are amazing, but it does appear that LCD may win, but it won’t be that big of a deal, they are both high definition with almost the same dimensions–but cable/satellite and movies should definitely equalize their dimensions with the common tv style!!
LCD are cr*p and can’t match the natural look of Plasma. Vizio is a poor-man’s LCD.
I have to agree with Mike up there; this article seems a little like an exaggeration, I mean really. It’s articles like these that discredit the whole news/information arena…
WONT MISS WHAT I NEVER HAD~ LOL
If people only knew how much better a plasma was to an LCD they would be so much better off. 120 hertz LCD is slow compared to a 480 sub field drive in plasmas. That’s just one of many things people don’t know. Like Panasonic, 100,000 hour half life, to most LCDs 60,000 hour half life. I guess blur and longevity aren’t what people care about these days. Its funny to me that people say LCDs don’t burn in. I guess they never seen it. At least plasmas can correct the burn in now. Well what can you do I guess.
LCDs are only selling more than Plasmas because plasma televisions are rarely instock so people will settle for LCDS instead. I will take a plasma tv over lcd any day when referring to picture quality.
I’ve had my sony 32″ plazma… great picture4sure
im lovin hdtv
Really? Plasma dying? Have you owned an LCD TV? I will agree that LCD is better when it comes to a computer screen but TV? Come on, you have to do better than that! Plasmas still eclipse LCDs, as long as Panasonic keeps on producing them people will keep on buying them. There are plenty of enthusiasts that CAN see the difference between a plasma and an LCD and they will buy plasma.
one day when i have more money, i aspire to such a wonderful TV.
Agreed with other comments. I’m about to buy hundreds of plasmas for hotels because service life is 100,000 hours versus 60,000 for LCD. AND I’m getting them cheaper than LCD. I only wish the current predominant plasma sets were better at energy efficiency. The NEO PDP sets need to come out and fast, not for picture quality or “thinness” but energy efficiency. Not to mention LCD sets are generally lower build quality across the board. AND with Pioneer leaving the game it’s like Samsung discontinuing its LED 240Hz sets. SO the highest end is going away. So what. Panasonic will absorb the tech and bring it to their sets. High-end sets only matter if their tech is a precursor to the mainstream. And Pioneer is an itty bitty tech company nowehere near the size of any mainstream sets. If Cnet didn’t review their sets nobody would care. This is the result of a down market ejecting a niche player.
i started with a plasma. then switched to a 120mhz LCD cause that was the new hype. it was great for blu rays but still didnt compare to plasma for sports. needless to say i went back to a 50″ plasma. LCD doesnt compare to plasma. with the newer plasmas the burn in is not a problem anymore.
I like my Sony.
plasma TV’s has burn in and burn out, it sucks
Good Bye Plasmas!
Who cares if they die out or don’t die out. It’s amazing that people spend enough time in front of there TV that that they notice the difference between LCD and Plasma. “OMG it makes my video games and sports so much better.” Try getting outside or maybe spending that $1000 bucks on season tickets and actually going to games…..LIVE! It doesn’t get any better than that.
Hmmm I have a plasma which cost me 6K when I first bought, and I ve been well happy with it.
LCD have much better features
fast ms fast contrast and they don’t reflect sun light but! Plasma on the other hands give a much longer time of use while LCDs crystal break
I love my 47 inch LG LCD 1080P!!!! I find no difference between plasma and lcd. Plus i’ve seen people with plasmas and they complain about the burn in.
GO LCD!!!
man that sucks. i work for bestbuy and at my store theres a really good balance between plasma and lcd.
wow no more elites!! well alleast we still have samsung.
Look, I couldn’t care less about the difference between LCD and Plasma. Personally, I won’t buy one of these expensive televisions until they last on average at least ten years. I cannot believe people are idiotic enough to spend money on these things when they last only a handful of years. Televisions used to last 10 or more years (sometimes over 20). These companies know people are stupid enought to pay the money, so why bother to manufacture reliable products, right?
I believe one of the reason plasma’s is dieing out is because when you play ps2,3 or x-box they used to leave a burn image on the screen.
No one wants plasma televisions anymore. It would be kind of like purchasing a VCR nowadays-doable, but very rare and only for people who need a VCR to run their tapes.
And like some other people have said, no one’s buying televisions right now either. There’s no point, especially when most tv’s look the same, act the same, and still won’t give you HD channels without subscribing to some lame cable company (yes I’m glaring at you, comcast)
And LCDs will soon be extinct, due to the superior OLED technology.
who is this guy and what authority does he have? he’s speculating, just like those people who said $4 a gallon for oil was here to stay last summer. plasma no longer has burn in, it’s just as thin as lcd, and my panasonic 42″ was a great buy for $799. even if plasma goes in the tank, it won’t take away the great picture we plasma owners have. they’re not going into our houses to take the sets away, so who cares what happens from this point on?
Bye plasma! You looked awesome without having to pay money for HD. (My friend has a plasma)
LCD is crap. Plasmas have much better definition, not to mention they are a bit cheaper. Hell, I still have a cathode-tube TV I use(although newer TVs are preferred). Now they’re trying to give plasma the boot already? This is just as bad as that Blu-Ray crap. Slow down, companies. I don’t want my plasma to be outdated yet(not that LCD is THAT much of a threat).
Do people not know that plasmas give you more depth to colors? The only reason one should buy an LCD is for video games, to brighten the dark areas. But with a calibration, plasmas out weigh LCDs. An investment in any plasma (especially a Pioneer!!) is worth it for the Blu-ray watcher. All Pioneer needed to do was advertise and educate the population about plasmas.
stephen, you’re wrong on the video game thing. my kids play mario kart on nintendo wii constantly, and there are certain images that are there through the whole 8 hours that they play. not only is there NO burn in, but there’s also a feature that will wipe it out even if it happens. i have a friend who works for best buy in their tv department, and he is constantly learning about everything new in tv’s. he steered me to plasma, and i’m happy with it for sure.
i suggest one be very careful with their statements as, like the writer of this article is obviuosly ignorant when it comes to technology. LCD can never match the quality of plasmas. Burn-in is an issue of the past… how can this writer be so ignorant?
OK I’m dating myself but this sounds like the old Beta vs. VHS thing. Superior quality lost out to price point. I have a 7 year old Panasonic 42″ Plasma TV and a 2 year old Samsung 40″ LCD and believe me, the picture on the plasma is infinitely better. Especially when the viewing angle is slightly off center. This is one of the big differences between the two, the fall off of picture quality on an LCD vs Plasma when viewed from angles that are not head on. But you rarely hear this mentioned.
Iv’e never owned a plasma befor but my Samsung LCD is amazing. The plasmas here at costco are actually cheaper then the LCD’s. Main reason…plasmas use TWICE as much electricty! During a time where everyones is concerned about paying their bills, thats a huge selling point. I am surprised nobody even mentioned that fact. I have never been happier then I am right now with my 46″ 120 hertz / 50,000:1 contrast ration Samsung LCD!
this is a stupid argument based on misinformation and speculation (a fancy word for a “guess”), and the writer clearly has no grasp on the facts. i’m going to read roger ebert’s blog. i can learn something there.
People calm down. It’s a television. LCD or Plasma…does it really matter? Either beat the tube tv’s that you all had 9 years ago.
Shut up and enjoy whatever tv you have. I have a Sharp Aquos LCD and love it….I’m sure I’d love a plasma too.
Get over yourselves.
I agree with Mike above. During this sliding economy, people aren’t buying any high ticket items. When it comes to a large LCD or Plasma, there’s not too big of a price gap between a quality LCD and a plasma, so I believe if they can’ afford a plasma, they probably can’t afford a comparable LCD either.
My 50″ Sanyo Plasma totally blows away about any LCD I’ve ever seen as far as picture quality, response time, and contrast ratio…LCD’s can’t touch it. If Plasma takes a hit in this economy, I’m sure the LCD manufacturers wont be far behind.
No mention of OLED technology? This is the future people, in five years this debate will be akin to arguing about your favourite dinosaur… (I’m a HUGE fan of the metriocanthasaur!)
In 5 years there will be yet ANOTHER article claiming that the best is is what the best was. Looking forward to the Bi Tronics rendition of the hologram viewer…you guys ain’t seen NOTTA yet, hahahaaa
Bought a 32in Insignia plasma and I’m extremely happy. For 477 bucks, it blows away any LCD in its class. A super bargain. I saw people thumbing their noses at the plasmas in the big box store I was at; and I thought, “WHAT FOOLS.”
I own two VIZIO’s 42″ and 32″ LCD. Love them both. I’ve owned the 42″ for a bit over a year and the 32″ just a couple months. When I bought the 42″ last year comparable 42″ Vizio Plasmas were considerable higher in price, this year the Plasmas of all sizes are cheaper than the LCD’s of similar size. Plasma is dead! Also I live Colorado and Plasma doesn’t do well at high altitude, not so bad in Denver where I live at 5280 ft. but far worse at higher levels!
I think that Plasmas are a great deal better than LCD, even with the burn aspect. I like video games and sports, bolth are better displayed on Plasma screens, whic are much more responsive. LCD’s care better left for computors, but If you want to watch T.V., go with the Plasma, trust me.
are yo kidding me!?!??
are you kidding me
Just another neo-nazi plasma hater. Probably worked for Circuit City with the rest of the mis-informed and misguided who not unlike used car salesmen, sold whatever they had more of in inventory, and claimed it the best. WHo cares if Pioneer is out of the game. Yeah, they were nice sets, but a comparable host of others come in better on the pocketbook. My customers are given ALL the information and generally decide for themselves that plasma is superior, instead of being steered into a lackluster display, cause they don’t know any better. Ding Dong the Kuro’s dead! More market share for the REAL players
After u watch a T.V 4 awhile U get use 2 the picture. So what’s the big deal. Sure it’s a good product and cost a penny. But if u sit in front of a old T.V long enough U won’t even care just as long as the show u r watching is a good 1. But yes if u happen 2 see a plasma u will 4 surly say WOW what a better picture. They r good products. I’m sorry about the bad luck.
yo nik u gay
just joking!!!!
lol
it all pick up by june 12 2008 i think i got me a lcd tv
Very very sad time when the best TV manufacturer is calling it quits. Pioneer has had the top rated TVs for 15 years and they never bothered wasting time on inferior LCD technology. As for the comment about LCDs being better for computers than a plasma… that’s not even close to being true. I have a 42″ 1080p plasma for my main computer screen. It’s used at least 6 hours a day, every day. Absolutely outstanding graphics and zero burn in issues. All TVs have image retention, even LCDs. Change the channel and it goes away… what a concept. People never seemed concerned about their old CRT TVs burning in, yet this was a very common problem. Oh is that why computers had screen savers? People need to be informed of facts and not live of tech data from 15 years ago. Maybe this will help lead the way for Laser TVs to take off…
ive been wanting a new set,but neither plasma or lcd have as good of a picture as my 10 yr old standard 32 in rca. the pictures appear, fuzzy, distorted, almost out of focus.has anyone else noticed this?
I have both and the pricing difference really makes LCD the better deal. Both are 1080P and I can tell very little difference when hooked up to my 360 and ps3. I spent $3,200 on the plasma and $1,500 on the LCD… your choice.
Looks like all the Plasma owners are getting nervous! Admit you were stupid for buying one and move on. Because years after your plasma has stopped working, my LCD will still be on the job, providing an awesome picture. You see the plasma owners never tell you about the short lifetime of a plasma T.V.
I have a Sam.LCD 120hz 1080p 50,000 to 1 and it is the top of the line LCD. I dont like plasma’s I had a chance to pay one and i didn’t. It had nothing to do with money cause i spent just about 3000 on the TV. I noticed that the LCD is crisper in some areas. Im a big sports fan and with the 120hz on it kicks butt. Gaming is the same way as sports. I would buy a LCD again if i had the chance. I have a dark room and LCD is better in dark rooms then Plasma’s
Errrr, 120hz? Is that all?
I’d have you know the plasmas are 600Hz, meaning 5 times faster and contrast ratio on the Pioneer is 1,000,000-2,000,000 to 1.
I luv plasma! Hate LCD…..
uhhh, yeah… barack’s been in office for 30 days… HE ruined the economy LOL
I think that LCD has come along way but I have allways thought Plasma has a better image. Go Panasonic!
This article is stupid- Pioneer is going to stop making ALL THEIR TV’s, that INCLUDES LCD’s. Hello?! This is irresponsible journalism, with total false claims. How can you say Plasma’s are dead because Pioneer isn’t making any more plasma’s OR LCD’s???
Plasma’s defiantly produce much more vibrant colors and provide a nice, sharp image. But once they need repairing it’s all down hill… I’ve had my 23″ Samsung LCD TV for about 3 years now, and it’s great! No overheating, and simple bulb replacement.
With Samsung’s introduction of an LED light source, DLP is the answer for me! I couldn’t be happier with my 62″ Sammy and have no concerns regarding bulb failure, as it doens’t have a bulb to fail!
Unless you want or need to mount your set on a wall, or cram it against the wall, this DLP might be your best option. Mine is located in a corner of the room, so it’s projection is a complete non-issue.
Scoff if you will, but to each his own!
What is this nonsense? Plasma puts LCD to shame.
Man, this reminds me of the Beta vs. VHS wars of the early 80s. I bought the Who’s “The Kids are Alright” on Beta cause I heard it had a better picture. Of course, try finding a Beta machine now. It’s all on DVD, or Blu-ray, or whatever the newest scam is to loot your wallet. From now on I’m sticking with vinyl.
screw them both lets go back to the big phone and listen to the radio get the transitor
Pioneer? They make TV’s? Well regardless…. my Samsung 50″ is AWESOME. I bought my uncle a 42″ lcd and almost was in shock over the drop in color and quality…. Plasma going away? Hardly, for anyone thats in there right mind. It was almost a waste to go and fill in this reply to help educate john q public… This article is FULL OF TROLL. Well played, Jose Fermoso.
Was this article a kid’s homework assignment? How’s mine:
Ferrari discontinues the Enzo….END OF AUTOMOBILES?????
Obama SUCKS!!! Give us our money back!!!!
Plasma ??? LCD ? ?? Has anybody watched TV, lately ? I’m keeping my old CRT television until there is something worth watching on TV.
I have to agree that it reaslly doesn’t matter whether or not you have a LCD or Plasma. From my own personal experience I prefer LCD because if the Plasma TV is handled incorrectly the fuse and parts on the inside will easily break and the TV will be useless anyway. As for the intelligent one that made the statement about Barack Obama was very ignorant because he is trying to fix the economy that Bush messed up and Plasma or LCD has nothing to do with that issue. A person is gonna buy whichever TV that see fits his or her lifestyle.
I find it kind of funny that Pioneer is ending plasma TV production. Most people don’t know this but they just stopped producing Laserdisc players January 2009,really look it up! I just think Pioneer is downsizing and plasma TVs will be here for a long, long time.
It doesn’t surprise me too much, I mean look at Blue-Ray and HD: Blue Ray is better but is being outsold by HD. As said by Chris, the amount you pay for quality; more consumers can afford and can deal with having a LCD rather than a plasma. Plasmas may die out, but if they do, LCD tech. is going to steadily increase. Also keep in mind that if they do “die out” there will still be sellers; it will take quite a bit of years until no one AT ALL will produce them or “produce on demand”. As it said-manufactures will produce them…
Why do we allow obama and our politicians to continue to rape the American people?! Give us our money back!!!
Oh you poor misguided children. The only way to watch anything is on a projector. You measure your screen size in inches. How cute. I measure my screen in feet. Boo hoo plasma is dead. Really, who cares? Right now all I care about is putting food on the table and keeping the lights on.
I have an american made RCA console tv that still has a great picture and good stereo sound. This year it will be 21 years young.
I’m sorry to see plasma go. They are so much better than even the best LCD, especially when given a “dirty” non-digital cable feed. True HD deserves to be seen on a plasma. RIP Pioneer. I hope Panasonic can keep up the good fight. Sony, well, who cares. I’ll go for Hitachi.
WOW!
How Sad! I’m sure glad I bought my 50″ Plasma before thye are obsolete! They are way better then LCD!
I personally have a 38″ LG LCD set that I got at a fantastic price (it’s an ’07 model and I bought it when the store was transitioning to ’08 models; normally $1199, I paid $575… New in box!!).
Picture quality is great, to me, and I consider myself a semi-connoisseur of high-end electronics (I built my own PC’s, and was one of the first people in the world to have an AMD FX51 CPU and ATI Radeon 800XTPE video card).
I did worry about the “burn in” issue with plasmas, as my friend had burn-in on 2 different sets: an ’05 Pioneer 54″ Plasma and an ’06 Sony 61″ Plasma. His nicest TV, actually, is his LG 56″ DLP in his basement (especially with a custom 2100watt Klipsch sound system). It has, by far, the crispest image and fastest response-time of any of the TV’s in his house. And he has a lot (and a lot of money), including the aforementioned two plasmas, the DLP, a 32″ LG LCD, a 26″ Sony LCD, a 42″ LCD, and lastly a 32″ LCD that he uses as a computer monitor. Oh, and a 1080p Projector for use when we want to truly feel “in the game”.
Sure, LCD’s can’t do blacks as well as other televisions, they can suffer from pixel burn-out, and their viewing-angle is generally more restricted than other types of TV’s… But they are catching up, or have caught up, to plasmas in most of those areas. Blacks still aren’t “pure”, but that’s the nature of the device. Pixel burn-out happens very rarely. Manufacturers are devising ways to increase viewing angles so that people don’t have to sit right in front of the set to enjoy all the colors and vibrancy an LCD can deliver.
In the end, though, it’s true that Plasma’s are more “lifelike” in their images. I recall standing in Best Buy watching a nature program that was playing on all of the TV’s (it was just the unobstructed view of the camera, which moved through jungles to a river to a snow-capped mountain; maybe Planet Earth?). Right in front of me were three sets: a 56″ DLP, a 54″ Plasma, and a 48″ LCD. There is NO DOUBT that the Plasma was THE MOST LIFELIKE in its ability to render these images, smoothly, and in amazing 1080p detail. The DLP looked great, but it felt like it was always trying to “catch up” with itself. The LCD looked fantastic, but like all LCD’s, the blacks couldn’t match the Plasma/DLP, and there was some “digital blurring” that disrupted the viewing experience.
I will stick with my LCD, though, as for the past year and a half, it has stood by me without fail. Thousands upon thousands of hours of all kinds of television watching, video-game playing (mostly first-person shooters, car racing, and sports games), and DVD-viewing. LCD’s seem to take quite well to upscaled-DVD’s, as unlike Plasmas, they are able to function at resolutions other than their native one.
That’s enough. I don’t know why I bother posting so much… Must be boredom.
this is for Nick, just wanted to ask him about why the AMD FX51 instead of an Intel chip? Sorry about responding so late but found most of the critiques about LCD vs Plasma interesting, expecially Nick’s from 2/23/09. Hope he can respond to my E-Mail.
If I had purchased a Plasma with a gip load of cashish instead of a Samsung A750 I would be screaming how much “better” plasma’s are too!! Ok for those few who are total freaks and believe the diff between high end LCD’s and Plasma’s has a huge gap – more power to ya’ll. As for me I will keep the extra cash and spend it on an extended warranty – then take the wife out to a very nice dinner a few more times than usual. LOL You people must really be couch potatos
This article is a joke.
Good, If you can tell the difference between the differences in the “black” areas in T.V.’s your a loser. I have a 46′ LCD and its PERFECT! I hooked up a blueray and it almost looks 3-D it looks so real. If you want to be idiots and spend up to $10,000 for a plasma so you can say the black level is better, you guys are the SUCKERS I trick everyday into making me a TON of money, oh BTW I work in the T.V. industry….
that’s such a sad fact…
Poor little plasma people…You bought a bad deal. Plasma is horrible anyways. The only thing plasma might be good for is sports….thats it. Next time do some reading before buying a TV. Just remember the sales people want you to buy plasma because they are more expensive, DUH! Talk to a REAL geek (not a best buy one), they will tell you the real deal.
My LSD makes all sorts of thing blurry but the colors are INCREDIBLE…
oh wait, LCD? Nah, I’ll take my Panasonic 800u, the only tv on the market to have THX video certification.
Marketing statistics are interesting, but they tell you what , not why, something is happening. Although numbers may strongly suggest it, Likely most LCD sales figures are a bit inflated right now because of the changeover to digital. A higher percentage of people are moving to buy in order to upgrade their tuners. -Most consumers hate add on boxes, free or otherwise. Many are more concerned with buying something digital, rather than of highest quality. Were plasma prices more inline with other products that have paid off their R&D, they would be getting their share of the market. Doubtful many consumers care what kind of guts are in their TVs. Plasma? just another step up the racing ahead technology ladder. Next year, bigger , better, sharper, just like last year was better (and pricier at the cutting edge) than this. industry slipped up and failed to keep plasma pricing in the market. Ho-hum. perhaps they should ask the government for a bailout.
I wish they’d just come out with SED already. Of course the way the economy is, it probably wouldn’t be able to get a foothold.
btw the Panasonic is plasma and costs less than smaller Sony XBR but has much better CNET reviews and for a reason (it got the editors choice in 08 and costs 1/3 what the Kuro costs) The only reason you should buy LCD is if you want to use it as a computer screen too or if it is in a very sunny room with no curtains.
I work during the weekdays and spend my weekend daytime hours outside so sunlight isnt an issue.
Baba Booey!!!!!!!!!
GO COLORADO! Too bad plasma screens don’t work in the mountains, but if you live there try looking out the window and seeing the beautiful view!
Dear Joe,
Please proof read your posts before posting online. Your post seemed so interesting. However, your many grammatical errors are so unnerving. I do no doubt you wrote this with feverish techie passion, but please, read before you post.
jaja…i never had a plasma tv but i wuz going to buy at less 2 i better get fast……
i love my panasonic 42′ plasma. i wouldn’t trade it for anything.
you can actually watch dark horror movies in the dark, sports are 10x better, the graphics are cleaner, there arent the live LCD “trails” on fast moving objects like tennis balls, and it plays more like a TV than a computer screen.
the only reason to ever own a LCD is if your TV room gets alot of sunlight and you watch most of your TV during the day. Otherwise you are seriously compromising picture quality.
I agree, Plasma is better, but there are some realities many of the Common Joe Plasma lovers seem to miss, even the Industry seems to miss. Believe it or not, reports show that approx. 76% of US households have standard tube TVs; one reason the Feds wanted to roll back the Digital Conversion Program. And, approx. 75% have no VCR. Many need to stop assuming rural America buys gadgets like the rest of us.
I recently read several article where the EU is planning on banning Plasmas & some LCDs, because they actually use more energy than the promised reductions. My cousin in Germany has confirmed this, along with Germany’s ban on Corn Syrup (yes, a totally different subject, but at least the Heinz Catsup he sends is made the old way; with sugar, not CornSyrup and there is a significant taste difference).
Now with American Consumerism taking a hit, so go the sales; the downside of having an economy where 75% of our economy is based on buying things.
I have a Sony LCD and like it, do agree with Plasma’s ability to avoid pixelation on fast scene, but can live with it, as I’m not married to TV and like to get out when I can.
Who gives a crap about plasma.I have a SAMSUNG LCD 1080P it’s picture is beautiful especially on blu ray . It doesnt leave burn in marks either.
A sad day that the production of the best flat panel TV ever made is coming to a end. Any video-phile should buy these TV’s up while you can, because there wont be another that can touch this until the OLED finally comes to market.
Colorado is over-rated! Nice state to visit, but wouldn’t want to live there, unless I’m a crackhead!
Purchased a 50″” KURO this summer. This TV is amazing! My wife works in the CE business and everyone regards it as the best TV without question. LCD’s are big step down from a TV like a KURO. I guess it will be easier to buy an LCD now since the KURO’s out of the picture as you won’t remember what your were missing… ignorance is bliss.
Maybe if some of you tech geeks hadn’t blown $4K on a TV, you could have avoided foreclosure and avoided this mess we’re in. Stop spending half your paycheck on luxury items that lose more than half their value after the first year, and start educating yourself about investing.
All the bozos that say that LCD have a longer life do not mention the fact that behind most LCD panels are flourescent tubes that backlight the image and fade with time… and they aren’t replaceable unless you want to spend 80% of the cost of the set to do so, if you could at all. Also, have these knuckleheads ever bothered reading their manuals? I guarantee that somewhere in the LCD TV manual the manufacturer discusses the potential for burn-in, that’s right… burn-in on an LCD TV.
Your average LCD TV performs no where near the level of a Pioneer Kuro panel. They are simply the best. Like comparing a GM Malibu to a top of the line BMW.
But, just like Beta vs. VHS, McIntosh vs. Windows, CD vs. SA-CD, DVD vs. Blu-ray, it just proves…10 million flies can’t be wrong… after all, flies love SH*T.
We’ll miss you, Kuro.
As a Pioneer Elite dealer, this is a depressing bit of news. The 60″ Elite Kuro is the centerpiece of my showroom at my TV store, and now I have to figure out if I want to drop Pioneer altogether. They do make some nice audio and video equipment, but their TV’s are amazing! Panasonics and Samsungs are also nice, but they don’t match Pioneer’s picture quality, styling and quality control. And yes, Plasmas do have a superior picture to LCD.
So many Plasma elitists here in complete amazement that their burn-in high priced piece of shit is going to die out. Tell me, how much have you been spending on your electric bill to get those ‘vibrant’ colors? The way these plasma elitists talk with their nose high, it’s as if they’re comparing a Ferrari to a Honda.
i love plasma..!!
I bet yah, LCD TV is awsome and good for your vision too. Plasma eats a lot of electricity compare to LCD. LCD is also affordable while plasma tv is not. LCD is the best and it can still compete with plasma.
DLP is the best. You have to look in the picture to if it is really all that. Every LCD and plasma I watch and sports is on all I can see is pixel blocks. I glad plasma is going away should of never been there in the first place. All they are is “bragging rights” for the rich man, so you can say its Plasma well plasma sucks and will always sucks. I sold things for a living so I had much time to actually look at the picture not the price tag!!!
While this is bad news for the plasma industry, it opens the door for LCD’s. NEC had arguably the BEST plasma products in the marketplace. I purchased an NEC Plasma years ago and it is still the best I’ve seen. My next product will be an NEC LCD for sure. DO NOT look at consumer grade panel LCD’s as you WILL regret it. Make sure you look at an NEC. You may pay about 10% more, but you will never have any worries.
I own a 50″ plasma and a 32″ lcd. I will tell you that the plasma picture is much better than the lcd. The 50 is a panasonic and the 32 is a vizio of which has a really good picture but still can’t compare with the plasma.
I still enjoy my old B/W TV which was made with pride in USA 50 years ago.
Except for the few tubes that were replaced in 1971, and ’75 everything rocks.
However it doesn’t have stereo sound…
My nephew, who used to repair computers on the side to pay his way through college, told me not to buy a plasma TV. He told me of all the plasma TV’s he’s had to repair because they burn out so quickly. The problem was that they overheated very easily. They functioned in many ways like a computer, but unlike a computer, they did not have a fan to cool them down. I don’t know if that problem was ever fixed, but I passed that word on to all my friends as well. Who wants to spend that kind of money on a plasma only to have it go bad on you and require costly repairs. Besides, I watch most of my TV shows online at this point. TV’s, satellite and cable companies are on their way to being obsolete in the next 10 years.
I have the newst plutonium 800 inch ‘ TV It is better than plasma and lcd its the win win win win of all winns It has the digital transitions on the interwebs.I am eliteing yuns.
man o man o man.. the war of the tv’s… what i think is that(or what matters most) any flat screen t.v that you can see movies or shows or w.e the f#c u wanna watch should judt display tv’s.. idk if you understood or not but what all im trying to say is that to me, quality does not matter if your trying to keep a freindly budget.. you should just be able to watch tv… does the quality really matter that BAD!! c’mon! its not the end of the world for crying out loud.. everything gets cheaper with time.. iPods are cheap.. 1gb shuffle use to cost what the price for the 2gb model does now.. so a good quality tv will be cheap but for now.. just get one for the new era thats to come…LOL unless your rich, by sony’s awesomeness pro litlle a$$ expensive tv.. more than $1000 for 19″ but thats if your rich.. hahaha lol
get something thats at 500$ and its like a 32″ or something like that.. thats what i got…
This article doesn’t make much sense. It is basically saying that because Pioneer and a few other big plasma manufacturers are stopping plasma production that plasma is dead. Like the article brought up, it is because of the economy, and so no shit people aren’t buying plasmas right now. Wait until the economy bounces back and plasmas will be back in full force.
LCD – Good for watching paint dry
My 50 inch Panasonic plasma – good for watching Paul Pierce and the Celtics whip the Lakers in the Finals……again.
Your tube tv probably still sounds better than most of the tvs today, even though it isn’t stereo. People today don’t know what good sound is.
I think everything is better in LCD.. there is no reaction time slowing down when you watch movies, sports(as if I give a rats ass bout sports) or games. plasmas seem also to give off more heat and burn up faster than LCDs..and for anyone that cares(which Im sure some dont) I own a Vizio and have no complaints whatsoever. and as an afterthought, anyone that wants to bitch about this “phasing out” of plasmas, blame the government for turning our economy into a pile of shit…
good kill the plasma tv!! it sucks! kill it off!! when Sharp came out with a 103″ LCD tv that killed the plasma right there plus I’d rather have a LCD tv that lasts longer than plasma =P
Plasma sucks! LCD Rocks!!!
This debate is stupid. All TV programming has become a non-stop extravaganza of marketing, propaganda and meaningless pop culture. Does it really matter if your brain is being washed with LCD or plasma? No wonder the bankers steal trillions from us and we act like nothing is wrong. Baaaaaaaaaah
I love my Pioneer plasma. I looked at LCD and couldn’t find one that even came close to the Pioneer.
“Why would any manufacturer get rid of such a superior technology that best represents sports, gaming and movie viewers? Bottom line, it’s just about pricing and demand.”
Exactly. I still have the RCA F38310 in my living room. For those that don’t know, it is the largest widescreen CRT TV ever made at 38″, along with the Lowe, and still arguably has one of the best pictures of any TV out. Had it since 2002. It will be a sad day when it finally dies. I’ve viewed many plasmas, Lcd’s, and my own DLP, and none of them hold a candle to the 38″ RCA. CRT technology died out because the hugh profits were not there once the public was fooled into buying LCD and Plasma’s. Granted the RCA is hugh and weighs 225 lbs. But for those only concerned with picture quality, CRT is still tops.
Well i see we have a lot of Plasma fans commenting here. I wouldn’t go as far as to call anyone Ignorant, but get real, there are many great TV’s that are not plasma. I’m sorry but just because YOU bought a plasma does not mean they are the absolute best TV with no doubts. I own a plasma, a LCD, and 3 CRT’s and my only complaint for any of them is the obvious size and weight of the CRT’s. The LCD TV’s generally cost more, that makes a plasma the choice for many people. In the past plasma’s could produce much deeper black levels than LCD’s, but today’s LCD’s have fixed that problem. MY LCD is a Samsung and i’ve never seen a TV with a better picture. Now that’s not saying i haven’t seen others (including plasma’s) with a picture just as good, many are just as good, but not better. It’s been said before that the “Burn-in” issue of older plasma’s has been fixed, that being said, the issue that gamers may want to watch out for is lag. Some TV’s will have to convert the resolution of a video game to match the standard resolution of the TV, some TV’s have to “Game Mode” to try to speed up this conversion. The worst TV’s for lag time is……… actually DLP. The main thing to remember is that all technologies improve over time, (for example old Plasma’s had “Burn-In” issues and old LCD’s couldn’t produce black colors well, both issues are fixed) so for someone to say “LCD can NEVER match the quality of plasmas.” is ignorant. If you like plasma, tell why you like it, if you like LCD, tell why you like it, there’s no need to say why the one you didn’t buy sucks so bad, if this was true we wouldn’t have so many options, there would just be one (like the old CRT days).
For the money, LG made (makes) the best plasma on the market. Go to Best Buy and pick out the best picture in the array of sets on display without looking at the brand plasma or LCD). Every time, you will pick a Sony or an LG. I have had an LG since 2005 and I have never regretted the purchase!!
QUESTION FOR PLASMA OWNERS:
Is the glare ever a problem? Im considering a Panasonic plasma, but I know that an LCD would be less affected by natural light.
Can any of you plasma owners see reflections from the windows, fan lights, etc?
Thanks for the input.
Those of you who don’t know the difference between Plasma and LCD will find out when Mr. Osama Obama Taxes you on the 3X power consumption you are using by owning a Plasma…. I sell LCD Glass and this is the reason Pioneer and others will stop producing Plasma…. The Gov is going to penalize them for producting these non-green products…. Plus, they are a disposal problem…..
I purchased two LCD’s last year a 46 inch for the den and a 52 inch for the family room. The power useage is much less than the plasma.
I own 4 plasmas 42″ – 58″. I own 1 LCD 14″ . The vastly superior quality of Plasma to LCD doesn’t seem to cross the author’s mind, only as a passing thought. I agree with some other commentors that this guy is working for the LCD crowd or LCD raw materials bunch. Pioneer was a puny player in the Plasma TV market. Panasonic dominates the field and also makes a pretty nice LCD. I also like Sony’s LCDs, but the Plasma vastly outperforms. What the author failed to concede is that Plasma is also the primary platform in Casinos, racetracks, broadcasting, etc. LCD cannot match the resolution, contrast, or reaction time of Plasma technology. The author needs to do a little more research and maybe not buy so much Sony stock.
You all are a sad bunch..
we just bought the new 52″ Sony XBR6 its refresh is adequate, and picture quality is far more superior to my sons Samsung plasma. Ya’ll just have a problem because you forked out too much money for a TV and now its out of date, i will admit that 6 months ago plasmas were way better, but now the new sony line, the XBR’s are just putting the plasmas to shame. and guess what, no burn in :)
this is what happens when you go shopping with your wife. i have been selling tvs and systems for a very long time, and if the male is purchasing by himself- i can close the deal on the first walking for a pionner. but when he comes with his wife- that’s when “can i have your card? we’ll be back during the weekend” happends .
and to rob– we are comparing a ferrari to a honda. LCD’s have been playing catch up since day one (fact) if you look closely- every manufacturer that sold both LCD and plasma… plasmas were their flagships. all of them (fact), and those that didn’t touch LCD were the ‘exotics’ of the display industry ( fujitsu, pioneer, Sony XBR plasma, vidikron ) (fact)
LCD is the poor man’s system display. … i just wanna cry… i didn’t even get to buy mine (and i was planning on the next model set..) ::sighs::
LCD’s SUCK plasma is the only way to wtf?
if you didn’t own a pioneer- you wouldn’t understand.
comparing XBR’s and samsungs to pioneer is like comparing a marine to superman. they aren’t in the same league- period.
the best sony is inferior to 2006 pioneer pdp-5070hd..
believe that.
sorry boys- a ridiculous article! anybody will tell u that plasmas give out way better carity- and deep rich colors than LCDs! experts will tell you that! panasonic makes the best plasmas , after they figured out how to extend the life expectency from 40,000 hours to 100,000 hours every other company followed in panasonics footprints. SORRY BUT PLASMAS ARE NOT GOING NO WHERE! THE BEST PICTURE YOU GET GET PEOPLE—-HANDS DOWN! -iand i made a HUGE MISTAKE on buying a lcd. WHAT A REGRET!
Considering that I just got off a conference call where I was told about the new features and models from Panasonic, I find it extremely ludicrous the statements made by the auther of this article without accurate information to back it up. He did not elaborate that Matsushita which owns Panasonic and another 660 companies worldwide changed their name last October to Panasonic because it was the most prominent worldwide. So the reporting of the financial loss last year for the whole company not the Panasonic division. The new models are 1 inch thick, 600 hz, with more brightness and less power consumption by at least 30% than last years models. The price, longevity, durability, contrast level quality, true blacks, besides the resounding lead in motion integrity surpass any LCD on the market. The new reviews coming out such as the shootout in Home Theater support this completely. Panasonci is doubling their production by October of this year compared to the beginning of the year before on new plants on landfills in Japan. The writer of this article needs a tour of PHL and THX. If you want to know those mean just go to your nearest Best Buy and talk with them. The Panasonice reps will be in the stores next month on weekends. Feel free to ask us anything.
Can we atleast all agree that the demise of Plasma is George Bushs fault?
All of you plasma fanboys should just shut up. Plasma is a dying breed, much like Beta. Yes, beta was a superior product to VHS, but VHS was cheaper to make and the equipment to view VHS was cheaper to make and therefore affordable to average people. The difference between plasma and lcd is only noticeable to techies. To average people, a 52 inch lcd is fine and costs about half of what the plasma version costs.
Good riddance plasma.
I sell the Cell my friend and if you think Panasonic will be selling their Plasma in 5 years you should hit that Bong one more time…..It will be Obama mandated….It is already being pushed in Cali, Plus, Panasonic doesn’t make their LCD Tv(oh you didn’t know that did you)…Just as Sony uses Samsung glass, Samsung uses AUO, Visio uses CMO and AUO, Sharp uses Sharp, LG uses LG and AUO, Sceptre uses AUO….If you want to shound smart stick to your business not mine….
It had to happen sometime. Its a huge waist of money because they die out then buy a new one. I think a person should buy one that they know will last for awhile.
Hmmmmm, I have a 42 inch LCD, it beats the crap out of my old 27 inch. I would like to try a plasma on my next purchase.
How politics about Bush and Obama got into posts about TV’s is kinda silly but since someone started it , I will add my own cooment on Bush
Do you know what I like best about Bush?
His absence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The author’s interpritation of the situation is incorrect.
The main reason Pioneer is getting out of the market is not Plasma vs LCD competion, but rather Pioneer vs Panasonic competion. Pioneer made a stratigic blunder: they committed to the absolute perfection despite the costs. Panasonic on the other hand made a smart strategic move, sacrificing a little of marginal quality at a significant production cost saving, allowing them to deliver nearly identical product at a steep discount, effectively pricing Pioneer out of the market. That’s really why Pioneer is shutting down – they fell victim to Panasonic’s shrewd thinking. As a marketing director, it was all but obvous to me when I went shopping for the new TV last year. Pioneer was out of touch with the market on this, even if there was no Panasonic plasma’s.
Unfortunately the general public is highly un-educated about electronics. The poor kids in the electronic stores know only what the “reps.” tell them. The product with the most hype has to be the best. Plasma is by far a better technology. But once again the uneducated public will kill the better of the two because they don’t know.
All those poor people who bought Bose and Monster Cable got so ripped off they would sue if they knew…
Hmm. I have a Samsung 58″ 1080p Plasma. It has 100,000 life hours and an energy saving setting. However, high energy use isn’t an issue if you have your set callibrated properly. If you watch sports it’s a no brainer. Hockey, Football, Baseball, and Nascar all look amazing. At 100k life hours it rivals the life of my Sony 720p/1080i tube hdtv. If you watch 12 hours of tv per day, it should last 25 years. If you decided to keep your tv on and watch it 24 hours per day, it should last 12.5 years. This tv is awesome. I’m not here to bash LCDs but I’m not a fan. I think Kuros are perhaps done due to the brilliant picture you can get in Sammys and Pannys for a grand or two cheaper.
Blueoyster57
“LCD is better in dark rooms then Plasma’s”
LOL! An LCD will blind you in a dark room. Silly rabbit. you have a one track mind. Plasmas are not going anywhere. Have you seen the new line of Panasonics coming spring 2009. Garanteed to be better than any LCD in everyway Possible.
PLASMA SUX
LCD SUX
PLASMA SUX
LCD SUX
Bunch of babies! Truth is if you find the right one either technology is great.
Hey, people you are talking about TV’s. Did you know that my Television was made in 1943 and still working, the pictures are so crisps and it sounds like a thousand volts of thunder. The channel is a rotary type knob and the screen is so cool, I won’t replace it for a plasma or LCD. Because my old TV was made by General Electric and I can convert my TV to plasma if I want. The only problem of my TV is that its picture is upside down, and the indoor antenna will rock you off its current flows. One time my wife and I had a fight regarding my awesome TV because of the smoke coming from the inside of my TV, she thought I was smoking a cigar. But I said I wasn’t but instead she hit me on my head with my 1943 TV, I was hospitalized for a week. Now my TV is gone and my memory also is gone. Now I divorced my wife because of the medical bill that loomed to $ 12,000 for what she has done to me, not because of my damn 1943 TV. Next year I will buy a new wall TV and a life insurance.
I have been selling Panasonic for a while, in Best Buy, Sears ,and in till lately, Circuit City’s. If you are thinking of buying a TV, hold on for a couple of months Just wait for whats coming out this year! You will be amazed! Knowing this product inside and out, as I do. If you were my friend or family, I would definitely steer you away from all other Plasmas and LCD,TVs. Honestly, from my heart, let me advise you, invest in the best . Don’T waste your money on what the salesman is getting a spiff from. A TV is an investment, get the most for your money. If you watched TV for 12 hours a day, a Panasonic plasma will last 40 years. Panasonic is the only TV that has a SD card reader hidden in the front in order to watch your digital photos, when your not watching TV, your plasma becomes a giant digital photo frame. You can Leave your favorite picture up, or do a slide show You will not experience burn in on your Panasonic. It5s a different breed than other plasmas, check them out! I think you will be pleased!
People the Tree huggers (Pelosi and Obama and the rest of their gang) will kill your so ever loved Plasma…. Power Consumption and plasma Gas is a big issue with this administration….. Oh ya, you can stop blaming Bush (I don’t like him either) and relized our new President is in power…
Vote them all out and start over… This way you can enjoy your Plasma’s for a couple more years…
I have three large TV’s in my House.. one Vizio 42 inch plasma, one Vizio 32 in LCD and one 60 inch Pioneer Plasma. I have to say that Vizio is a great TV for the money. As for Pioneer… I LOVE my 60 inch Plasma. I’m glad I have one. I do not like the slower refresh rates of the LCD’s… they are terrible for fast movies or sports.
I have a 50″ Panasonic plasma (was almost $5000 when new), and within a year I had notice the colors already beginning to degrade. Whites are becoming gray-ish borwn and all colors are not as vibrant. Now I’m not sure if this is normal, just a fluke, or old technology, but I am VERY disappointed that withing a year my TV was already showing it’s age. I have 2 32″ LCDs of about the same age (about 6 months newer but now over 2 years old) and their pictures are as clear as the day I hooked them up.
Check the Consumer Reports ratings. LCDs are closing in quality-wise and comparable plasmas use 3X the electricity. That alone makes them worthy of death.
Do not listen to Mr. Best Buy buy LCD….The only new technology coming is OLED…. And it will be 5-7yrs before they can build a Gen7 fab to produce this Technology….
Enjoy your TV!
Consumer Reports have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to electronics. They represent the uneducated population because they are uneducated.
who cares. I used to think Bush sucked and it couldn’t get any worse. Well, I was stupid. Obama is taking more of my money and spending it where he thinks it should go. I guess that’s what the people want. Too bad there’s so many Americans who don’t want to work for a living any more and just expect handouts from the government. If you’re lazy and a worthless piece of s### Obama is your man! Go Obama!!
only the rich buy Pioneer Brand televisions anyway, I have 3 different brands in my home, RCA a rear projection 52in (monster), a Samsung46in Plasma and our newest a Toshiba 32in LCD. All have given us no trouble thus far but our Plasma has the best picture of the three by far reaches. When it was purchased it was actually cheaper than the LCD as they all once were and im so glad it was. I will say that it does generate some heat but nothing the ceiling fan cant take care of. I really hope to see the prices come down on the larger screens and plasma continue to be seen on the shelves! LCD and projection will never be able to compete!!!
Plasma vs LCD is old news. The future is OLED. Makes plasma look like tube.
People did not want Obama they just wanted Bush out….Socialism is coming faster than Plasma’s death…
Buy your guns before it is to late!
People who can’t see the difference in contrast and brightness between a plasma and an lcd need their head examined. Get back to me when an lcd is able to accomplish having a visible picture when you’re outside of the 9 square foot viewing box…or not feel like you’re watching a movie through a dirty window. Once again, completely inferior technology wins out. What’s next? DLP becoming a top seller?
To comment on an earlier posting, LG plasma tv’s are a piece of trash of an HDTV. I work in an electronics store, selling the latest and greatest, and I would NEVER sell an LG (plasma) tv to ANYONE!! They still have burn-in issues and their color representation is almost comedic. All colors on an LG plasma look extremely forced and cartoon-like. As far as their rating goes, they’re not even in the top 5. If you want an awesome plasma set and don’t want to pay the astronomical price for a Pioneer, look at Panasonic or a Samsung.
WOW, a no name person with a no name/ no credibility website states that lcds are better plasma, nd plasmas are dying. If anything Sony is dying. Well I took a huge loss selling my Sony 52 XBR to get a 50 pani. The Sony was horrible on formula 1. DTM, football, etc. Way too much ghosting and the colors weren’t there. After watching on my friends pani, I had to make the switch. Plasma’s are coming down in price and people jsut buy lcd’s over plasma because that is what walmart sells. My local best buy will all tell you to go with a plamsa
OLED will kill LCD as well, so this is all much ado about nothing. The technology of the future is already being shown in labs – laser displays and OLED displays that are paper-thin, flexible and have resolutions exponentially higher than what we’re watching today.
Getting this technology cheap enough for the average consumer? well, by the time this recession is over, the new technology will be there, and affordable.
aahhh sht. dm plasma aitn goin no were, lcd not really good

PLASMA TV’S WORST NIGHTMARE HAS COME TRUE!! LCD SHALL TAKE OVER ALL!!
well I have a 42″ Panasonic plasma that’s 4 years old and has seen an incredible amount of game play and still looks perfect. However I did just purchase a new 46″ samsung 1080p lcd and it looks great. I will say that I do notice the difference with sports and action scenes between the two units. Plasma is still smoother and blows away my lcd when watching non-HD channels but my LCD looks incredible with blue-ray or a good HD channel. At the end of the day get what you like because your the one that has to watch it.
Is this author crazy? I’m getting ready to buy a plasma this weekend. We just moved into a new place. Plasma is not dying out – how ridiculous!!!
who cares about tv. Get off your asses and do something besides watching tv. Oh, I forgot you don’t have to do anything. I’m paying for your welfare check! Thanks Obama!! You got to love the dumbs###ts that voted for Socialism. First Socialism, then Communism! I guess that’s what the people want! Bend over and wipe my ass for me, please? Thanks Obama!
Does grammar mean NOTHING anymore???? Proofread your articles or don’t publish them….
The best TV you can get for your money is a Panasonic Plasma. I don’t see this Technology “dying” anytime soon especially with panasonic z1 model to be released Spring 2009, this Panny will be a huge seller, huge enough to keep Plasma’s in the game for years to come. Pioneers death was sure to come. You would be an idiot or a wealthy person to Purchase a Pioneer over a Panasonic When Panny’s are 1/3 the price and just about equal in quality. One company dying out does not doom this technology, I believe it will make it better!
at a local sports bar a A electronic company came in and put dpls, plasmas and lcds Most people couldnt tell the deference. in picture quality, It was funny to see people tell how much better there picture with plasma pick a lcd or even a few that picked dpls at 12 feet not very many could pick witch was witch so who cares if plasma dies it will be replaced, in a few year by something better,
I’ve got a Magnavox CRT from 1972. You think you got something great because its new and shiny? The Best test is the TIME TEST. but just to make me feel better i hope your $3,000 TV fails tomorrow! Hahahha!
Well considering that people will now be scaling back their spending (not buying giant unneeded TVs) Plasmas such as the 32 inch vizio should do just fine. It has a much better picture than any lcd could imagine at its price range. I bought mine for $550 6 months ago and the last I saw it at wal-mart was around $450. So I wouldn’t call it the end of plasma just yet.
Once again, it’ll be up to those of us who have any balls who will stand up for our rights! We all know that liberals are a bunch of pansi asses! And yousuckattes- You won’t have the freedom to smoke a bowl when you want because you’ll be among Communists. You’re the dipshit!!! Pull your head out!!
First of all, Pioneer announced over a year ago they weren’t plamsa tv’s anymore because there cost was too high and no profit. So obviously the author is a little slow and not very credible. and what is this website. Cnet voted that the panasonic 58 pani is the best overall tv out. If you like ghosting and and grey whites and not rich blacks., dead pixels the go with a lcd. I have a 3 year old 42 pani plasma and brand new 52 samsung lcd and the old pani looks 10 times better. what a mistake, dont listen to anybody that tells you to buy an lcd. you will regret it.
Those of you who say Plasma is far better than LCD are correct, but not for long. The problems with LCD is the deep black and the response time. They are putting technology into the LCD’s that will allow them to match the quality of the Plasma’s. And for the lack of burn on the picture I feel that these new LCD’s will be far superior to Plasma.
Plasma is the only way to go I have a plasma Panasonic 50″ in my den, Panasonic 42″ in my living room and a Sony 42″ lcd in my bedroom and all are 1080p. I bought the Sony and I wish that I would have purchased another 42″ Panasonic. The people that say lcd’s are the way to go are realy talking out of their behind, I could go on but I will leave it at that!!!!!!!!!!
Plasmas are quite a bit cheaper and look better the “ONLY” reason to buy and lcd is if you have a lot of windows opposite your tv, the lcd’s don’t reflect the light, if you have a darker room you’d be a fool not to buy plasma
I just debated endlessley on wich one to buy. It all came down to watching several models from different friends houses. This article HAS to be based on nothing but alarmist opinion. One that is OBVIOUSLY based on lcd bias. I ended up buying a THX certified 50″ Panasonic plasma. I love action movies and most of all football. I checked out several lcd models that had the 120hz refresh rate. And during fast action segments, THE BLUR WAS STILL THERE! That ladies and gentelmen, sold me. If they end plasma, I will continue to LOVE my plasma for as long as I own it and would’nt trade it for ANYTHING!! lcd CAN’T CARRY Plasma”s jock. PERIOD. As far as burn in, I just use my good olg 36″ sony vega trinitron for games. (remember those??) LOL
Like my song? :
Obama SUCKS
Obama SUCKS
OBA Ba Ba Ba ma ma ma s-s-s-sucks
Hey!! He said he promised to fix this and that
but instead he ended up using sticks and bats
to SMASH!!!!!
The economy
that was weak and flat
we let him speak and slap our hands.
Conviced
he would save the world
we let him in
and now we……………….WEEP!!!!
To the sound of his voice
and the random vigorous acts he poures
on our backs and our packs
But not everyone gets to face the facts
that have splashed on the patch that where once…… cleeeaaaaaaan~
at least everyone here agrees obama sucks a major man dick
What is an LCD anyway… is it a spanish cd?
lol okay so i know that we all watch ALOT of tv, but whats the big deal why by more material crap its just stupid and a waist of money i my opinion, but yeah cant really miss what you never had i like my old school tv =]
Too bad there isn’t anything worth watching on TV anyhow…I just like to flush my dollars down the toilet…you’d swear it was in 3-D.
Plasma is much better than LCD. I have a 720p Samsung Plasma, and we compared it to 1080p LCDs and the plasma beat it hands down. That comparison held for all the big 4 brands (Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and Sharp), Plasma is just sharper, more colorful and they are cheaper!! Shop with your eyes, and you will want a plasma. We have a good bit of sunlight in our room and it still looks outstanding. I hope that some companies will continue to make them.
LCD is far better, performance wise, than a plasma ever will be. I dealt with plasma for a while and had junk in comparison to LCD. Yes, the picture is better for money snobs, but only after you buy $3,000 dollars worth of extra equipment to get that resolution difference. Not worth it, and if you do buy it you should check you Napolean complex at the door.
For people who are building home HTPC’s and the like…LCD wins hands down. Really, LCD wins in every single category except for really high-resolutions and black-depth. However, this is not to mention the technology that is being developed on LCD’s. Plasma is getting left in the old, dry, field…and rightfully so. Plasma is like those people who still like records. Yes, they sound ok, but not great..CD’s came along for a reason. Some day we’ll all wish we had bought a plasma for it’s rare antique value. Like the first color TV or something. Regardless, plasma will be nostalgia in 5 years from now.
LCD has better compatibility and capability. Good-night plasma. Thanks for getting us started, but I gladly leave you behind, along with analog, after the transition (if they actually do it this time).
The DVR killed the plasma tv. Don’t get me wrong plasmas are great but not with a DVR or dvd player. The burn in effect is bad. If you pause it for too long you have ruined the tv. I know there are people out there that say it doesn’t happen but it does. I work for a major satellite provider and i have seen it more than once. That is why lcds have out sold the plasma. They do not burn.
i dont know who you idiots are that keep saying that lcd’s are cheaper then plasmas but i work at circuit city (for now haha) and have for the past 2 years and since i started the price difference between plasmas and lcds was always huge….and plasmas were much cheaper…we did not carry pioneer but we do and always have carried panasonic and samsung and samsung plasmas are half decent when it comes to picture quality….however panasonics offer incredible picture quality for a very reasonable and affordable price and they destroy all lcds in picture quality realistic coloring motion technology….sooo i dont know where you guys are getting your information from for those of you saying lcds are cheaper and or better quality but you must be out of your minds or just have no idea what your talking about….buy a plasma!!!!
i agree with mightyducky2. tv’s are nice and all but i think being out at the event is better than HD, its REAL! i could care less if it this happened because i still got a standard def tv and dont plan on upgrading till it breaks. but… i do have a projector =)
I agree, a plasma picture is superior to the LCD, but to pay what they want for a plasma just so it can die in 10 years? C’mon, I want my buck to go farther than that!
I can live with LCD quality (which isn’t that bad and you know it) and get more bang for my buck. If you want to throw $2500 down the toilet, go ahead!
I see these televisions everyday and with the exception of the Samsung LCD’s 650,750, and 850 there are no better televisions than plasma screens. Black levels, response times, and video processing far pass any normal LCD. With Plasma screens being at a better price point for a LCD that comes only close to a plasma it is unlikely that plasma will die anytime soon. Just because pioneer is out, mostly due to the fact that the average customer doesn’t want to send $4000 on a TV, is no reason to think Panasonic’s rising sales will magically disappear.
AFTER ALL, WASN’T THE T.V. THAT GOT OBAMA ELECTED??? OR WAS IT THE MEDIA??? I’D SAY THE T.V.
People don’t want to take time time to research the difference, they just know LCD and that’s it. I bought a 52in Sony lcd , Circuit City had to ordered it, lucky they went out of business so I got a refund. While waiting for the Sony, I spent time and watched plasma and lcd. Plasma have much better color, lcd are just bright. I don’t want to watch a Blu-Ray soap opera
I bought a 42″ LCD several years ago at the urging of the salesman. Had it 2 days and took it back and got a 42″ Sony plasma. Last year they made them. Picture is still great and far superior to LCD.
Liked plasma so much, bought a second plasma, a 1080p Samsung 50″, 2 years ago.
There’s no comparison in picture quality when you’re watching fast action sporting events. Plasma is the best hands down.
The best television is the one that gets a lousy picture, has a small screen, and is shoved into the least-used corner of your home. Because that’s the television that allows people to take back ownership of their life from the clutches of the one-eyed monster.
Death of energy-sucking, completely frivolous, time-wasting, mind-rotting plasma sets? Good. I can only hope that the rest of them go the same way.
wow, all the hub bub. got an idea, get the hell off the couch. and yes obama sucks, everyone i talk to, nobody voted for him, how is he in there?
Don’t sweat it, all you Plasma and LCD lovers. All your sets will be dead or in need of costly repairs within 5 to 10 years. ( circuit boards, dust, and high temps, just don’t go together well ) . Plasma may be tops in pics but what happens when all the companies go under? Who’s gonna service your tv ? I don’t like it either but dems the cold hard facts of life…
OBAMA SUCKS . OBAMA SUCKS. OBAMA SUCKS.
Anybody that doesnt realize he is turning this country into a socialist tyranny who will leave a debt to our children which can never be re-paid is ABSOLUTELY IGNORANT and STUPID. These are the wellfare using, non-working, lazy mothfckrs that are ruining this country.
HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK A “STIMULUS” bill which only wastes millions of dollars on useless is CRAP is going to help ANYTHING.
WE NEED TAX CUTS TO PUT MONEY IN THE HANDS OF REAL AMERICANS WHO KEEP THIS COUNTRY AFLOAT.
BY THE WAY, 39% OF AMERICANS PAY NO TAXES AT ALL AND THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT OBAMAS SOCIALIST CRAP!!
Another testament to marketing and price point trumping the better product and further proof how lemming like the average consumer is. Plasma produces a much better and more natural picture, is now less expensive then most comparative LCD’s and yet people are still snatching up LCD’s! Amazing!
By the way, PLASMAS ARE BETTER. Except for glare.
I don’t understand why you are talking down on Obama. When he just got into office about 1 month and 4 days ago. Do you really expect a change to happen that soon. Before you blame Obama how bout, you start by thanking your former president George W. Bush for getting us into this debt. Now Economist have already estimated that even with Obama’s Stimulus package, unemployment will not drop till next year…….to dumb it down for you, this means we wont see a drastic change in our economy until next year. So instead of hating on him how bout you try to give him a chance.
P.S. If you pay attention to national news, you would know we aren’t the only country with economical problems.
Plasma is the best, panasonic my favorite even though ive never owned Pioneer. Did get to try out olivea lcd horible i mean really bad pictures, way less colors chitty! I also had LG LCD horrible compared to panasonic
Typical – blame it on bush. Watch some more of the liveral media. Yeah – they’re not biased at all.
Bummer, man! I bought a 50″ Samsung plasma last week, and I’m in love! After 2 weeks of intense internet research, this tv rated out VERY well, and I agree. I’ve seen many LCD’s, none would match the crispness of my Plasma, especially considering I picked it up at Best Buy for $890! They can’t take it back from me now! I got the extended warranty for $160, for 4 years of coverage, so if it does break down, I guess I’ll reluctantly have to get an LCD. Another example of the American public wanting cheap over quality and longevity, and the bit ch and complain that it doesn’t last very long!
WOWO lovin the obama digs (RIGHT INTO MY FN POCKET!!!!!!!!!!!)
it’s all about the O
The reason why LCDs outsell plasmas is mainly because they dominate the 20-37 inch (smaller) TV market. Most HDTV sales fall in this market. For the smaller HDTVs, LCDs are cheaper to manufacture than plasmas.
However, for 42 and 50 inch televisions, many plasmas are cheaper than their LCD counterparts. For example, compare top-rated plasma manufacturer Panasonic to top-rated LCD manufacturer Samsung, and you’ll find that the plasmas are about 10-20% less expensive. For these TVs, the plasma’s do look slightly better. If you browse the web (CNET, ZDNET, AVS forums), the critics also reach the same conclusion.
Thus, in the end, ultra high-end Pioneer going out of business does not spell the end for plasma. Plasma will definitely stay, and Panasonic is still a profitable company and will continue to make plasmas.
Bush is to analog tvs as Obama is to Plasma. Bush sucks
By the way, 6 out of the 8 yrs bush was in charge the economy was ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT. It was the DEMOCRATIC pressure to lend money to people who should not have qualified for home loans which ruined the banks and started this whole collapse. WAKE UP PEOPLE. STOP LISTENING TO EVERYHTING MSNBC spits out. They’re all liberals with AGENDAS. WAKE UP. DAMN!!
What does Obama and politics have to do with the debate between Plasma and LCD tv’s.? Smoke another bowl and click on the right website wasteproduct….
Don’t give up. Hope things would get better. The future is full of hope. Research further please.
hey Nigel, Canada is calling
Overall, plasma produces better picture (livelier colors). But LCD consumes a tad less electricity and doesnt lose out in sunlight.
A RECESSION LAST 18 MONTHS ON AVERAGE. WE would have been out of this by mid year, if it wasnt for Obamas fear tactics and now a “stimulus” bill from which we will never recover.
Obama supporters really need to get an education. His own economists talk down his plans.
IGNORANTS ARE RAMPANT in this country – APPARENT BY THE FACT THAT HALF THE NATION VOTED FOR OBAMA. But %40 DONT PAY TAXES, SO ITS UNDERSTANDABLE THOSE LAZYASSES WOULD WANT HIS HANDOUT POLICIES IMPLEMENTED.
Plasma and LCD are both overrated and short lasting products. They either burn out quickly or the speakers short. Give me a good old tube any time :) They may not have high definition super sound, but the old fashioned quality tv’s last a good deal longer and im not spending money every six months to have the dang thing repaired or replaced.
ONCE ALL YOU PEOPLE REALIZE THAT OBAMA’S “CHANGE” IS NOTHING MORE THAN A CUTE SLOGAN WHICH DOESNT ACTUALLY STAND FOR ANYTHING, WE WILL BE HEADING TOWARDS THE 2012 ELECTION WHERE A REPUBLICAN WILL BE VOTED PRESIDENT TO TRY AND REPAIR ALL THE CRAP OBAMA HAS F’D UP. GUARANTEED.
LOOK AT THE HISTORY PEOPLE…THAT IS IF YOU KNOW HOW TO READ
O.K. this is kinda played out. Lets start on the Mac VS PC argument now.
VHS VS Beta?
I agree entirely. However, an interjection is looming. HOW come that with all this and that and what not everyone has on their minds…Just wondering ..but.
Did we all just decide that well; If I’m not gettin paid I ain’t doing ( )it. Monies pre-destined for latter use diminished. Everyone with something to say. Wonder if makin all this extra money…that was just created for the sake of spending, I mean really, (lol)
Isn’t that capital just always gona be there? We can’t just “pull the brake at just the right time”.
Would those facilities, as they are determined which are established for what, transfer the dough away from its account number to someone else’s? How could it be good to just add money to whats out there? Sure, so the persons who are actually feeling this economis crisis will have a piece of their pie back? We all die. Seriously, it’s done been done but still. They didn’t earn money did they? We just giving it to them cause we need them to remain usable? So we lose our homes, forced to seek alternative measures…no aid for that. hmmm
The wealthy getting a tax increase. Unless you need to pay your gas bill….then let someone else get a bite.
BLAH BLAH BLAH
And after your work. Lot of us hafta drive many miles…thats time just driving. Wouldn’t it be super keen to live close to your job? If you could stay close to your job….and not have to worry about getting in to some sort of any kind of negative event to deter you from utter happiness. Time with the ones you love.
And how come you can be at a redlight and the cars in front of you a good bit of the time wait sooo long to begin forward progress? The lead car is okey for whatever…but the cars after? Them same cars will be nose to tail on the straightaways and need 4 or 5 seconds to go. Cars just sit far back and when someone pulls into that lane behind them. Those cars a good bit of the time won’t even scooch up just a lil teeny bit nevermind give the space to completely enter lane. Could we change that too.
Cars that ride out in the fast lane doing the limit? Isn’t that some sort of law or courtesy even to where…unless you rolling or in a line to stay right?? I mean really. Nice to see tickets written for THAT.
And how come people that live in other countries follow or perceive figures other than our God? What’s up with that?
How can you really go with other than the fact that something made us? We couldn’t be solely a mathematical probability. because. There couldn’t just be a single cell…from …humm…magic? For whatever reason it’s easier somehow disbelieve. Is that the lowroad? Okay imagine a two car garage built onto a house. Just the bare surfaces. floor..walls…roof and … say you come back a kajillion (really super long span of time, oh, any amount beyond 300billion or so)
years later and. bum bum da bum
Theres a jaguar in one spot and a caddilac in the other it dont work like that.
Seems like tough times were on the horizon anyways…but who knows…really…
I just hope for good.
the article stated that Panasonic sells their glass to JVC,
JVC hasnt had a plasma in well over 3 years
Hey all you politicians and tv haters get the fuck off this page your ruining my reading!
I UNDERSTAND NOBODYS HAS AN EDUCATED RESPONSE TO MY ARGUMENT WHICH CAN ACTUALLY HOLD UP.
ITS BECAUSE THERE ISNT ONE.
OBAMA SUCKS. OBAMA SUCKS . OBAMA SUCKS.
OKAY…. HERE WE GO, I’M NOT BIAS ON THIS MATTER. JUST EXTREMELY EDUCATED. CORRECTION; LCD’S HAVE BURN-IN. CORRECTION; PLASMAS HAVE A LIFE SPAN CALCULATED TO LAST 100.000 HRS DO THE MATH. WILL LAST OVER 20 YEARS, BUT WAIT! THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE SET DOES NOT WORK. JUST MEANS IT LOST BRIGHTNESS. NOW, HERE IS WHERE YOU BIASED LCD HUGGERS ARE ALWAYS WRONG. LCDS DO NOT LAST LONGET THAT PLASMAS. THE BACK LIGHT WILL DIE AT ABOUT 60.000 HRS AND GUESS WHAT! UNLIKE THE PLASMA WHICH LOOSES SOME BRIGHTNESS AT ABOUT 100.000 HRS THE LCD WILL NOT WORK AT ALL WITHOUT THAT BACK LIGHT. UNDERSTAND? ARE YOU BIASED LCD HUGGERS ALSO AWARE OF THE DEAD PIXELS YOUR SETS HAVE? YOU MIGHT MISS 1 OR 2 BUT THERES MORE TO COME. LCD’S ARE GOOD FOR MONITORS AND MANY OF MY EDUCATED COSTUMERS DONT EVEN BELIEVE THAT ANYMORE. THE ONLY KNOWN PROBLEM WITH PLASMA’S IS ALTITUDE. THAT BURN-IN AND SHORT LIFE IS CRAP. PLASMAS ARE GOING ON 10TH GEN AND HAVE CORRECTED THOSE ISSUES WHILE LCD MANUFACTURES ARE STILL WORKING ON THEIR BLUR AND DARK LEVEL ISSUES. I HAVE BOTH AND THEY BOTH DO THEIR JOBS WELL. PLASMA, BEST TV. LCD BEST MONITORS.
sound’s like a crap of shit…
Here is the problem? You have all this cheap off-shore electronics where they used older processors and parts and then name it whatever you want. Then WalMart, Sam’s Club and Costco sign these lowriders up. The LCD PC market started the price reductions four years ago. Not much profit in the flat panel business. As an integrator you need to sell audio and services to service. I think Plasma has a great picture in the correct room setting. Plasma provides you with a CRT like picture. LED Backlit is on the way but I don’t think that Plasma will or should go away.
NEBUD . .. YOU MUST BE ON CRACK.
YOU CANT EVEN CONSTRUCT A COMPLETE SENTENCE. MUCH LESS GET A CLEAR POINT ACROSS.
It is true that plasma’s have a better picture quality, but if one company says that they don’t like it, then other companies are going to follow suit. Now lets see how long Bluray lasts…
My Panasonic Plasma is thebomb.com/yourmom!! My mom has a LCD…not as good as my Plasma. No grey glares at certain angles; Plasma has clear, vivid picture at all angles for all to enjoy!
Well if lcds are so crappy response time wise , why do 95% of gamers use them? if it can keep up with that (50+ fps no streaking AND at over 1080p, res ), nfl sunday ticket is a walk in the park. btw damon i watch tv and game on the same twin 24′ widescreens (lcd)
Send in the Bush Trolls! Article on plasma v. LCD? Hell no! It’s a chance for cocksucking Bush loving trollbots to whine about all the ills of society not fixed within the first 90 days! Bush just took an 8 year dump, wiped his ass with the Constitution and didn’t flush on his way out. Someone hit the fan!
Come on, there are plenty of ways you can continue destroying the planet and maintain your “Me First” lifestyle: Huge Escalade for the soccer mom, 900″ plasma for the diabetic armchair quarterback and NASCAR and go-karts for the overweight kids. Don’t give up!
Deal with the huge problems YOU created during the past eight years. Truth hurts, trolls! Waaa!! Baby want ba-ba!
Seriously, I love plasma.
wow way to be on topic NOT!
lol Todd.
I live at my work 2003 model car with 48k miles on it. Your comments hilarious as they are are very hurtful. Can’t a fella wonder? Couldn’t we as a whole affect change to allow us to have more time with the “me first” my first baby…baby?
Maybe a class on courteous driving? Shoot. We might could even make a rule that sez u gota live within (so) far from your work. Lets work together and create something to better us. Dont break me down! Build me up! Love me, my brother. lol
u so funny
ACTUALLY MORE GAMERS USE PLASMA’S NOW. I’VE PLAYED CALL ON DUTY ON BOTH SETS. LCD DISPLATED BLUR. GAMERS DID PREFER LCD OVER PLASMA DUE TO THE BURN-IN ON PLASMAS. NOT THE CASE ANYMORE. THANKS TO PANASONIC!
Plasmas Rule – My brother has a 5 year old Panasonic 720P plasma, that’s still looks great. Recently purchased a 50″ Toshiba LCD, had it less than two weeks, sold it, bought Pioneer 50″ Kuro. I have a 50 Panasonic TH50PZ750U plasma, AWESOME set. There are no LCDs and any price that compare to high end Plasma. I’m hoping Panasonic utilizes the Pioneer engineers and keeps plasmas leading the way for TRUE picture qaulity. LCDs are cheaper, there’s a reason for that! My advice, do your homework before you purchase and snag a Kuro while you can or a high end Panasonic plasma.
The LCD’S are winning because Plasma’s are never in stock. The store managers are ordering more LCD’s because they think that’s “the in thing now.” I have been looking for a Plasma for about 2 months now. Fry’s, Best Buy, and other electronic stores. The only ones I can find are the small screens. Everything else is LCD. And if I am looking for a Plasma the way I am I’m sure thousands of other people nationwide are doing the same. Stores always push a newer technology because consumers eat it up. Even if the technology isn’t as good. I strongly believe this is the way it is with Plasma vs LCD. If you put an LCD next to a Plasma, the Plasma is very noticeably clearer, much better quality. And I have had my Plasma for 2 years now and not once have had a burned screen. And the Plasma’s today are even better. People just buy into the hype without doing there own research. That’s what it boils down to.
You all seem to have a one set mind on all this… I’ve read every single one of your comments posted here… and not one was an opened minded comment on both Plasma and LCD screens… if you really want to debate on what ‘is’ better go find some one who has the ingenuity and smarts behind both monitors… i mean can any of you tell me what makes up the plasma and its components? wat gives it its great crystal clear picture? and same goes for LCD’s with its liquid flow and the new motion flows that are coming out? All of you, go read up on how theses televisions work and the secrets behind its function and then compare, this is not a comment to dumb all of you down or to come back with some smart ass fucking remark which i know some few will do.. just go out of your way to catch up on your research and dont be narrow minded on just one monitor. I already know how Plasma, LCD, and motion flow screens work, and if you look at it they all have its ups and downs, but i am not one to judge for a whole.
When I went shoping for a HD tv, i checked out both plasma, and LCD. But then I saw it… A 1080p HD projector. When i saw the picture quality, and size of a projector, I thought.. “Who whould buy anything else?” So i bought one.. Spent less then Half of what i would have spent on either a LCD or a Plasma. Brought it home in the front seat of my car. (it’s smaller than a VCR.) and about an Hour after i bought it, im sitting at home watching a HD Picture as large as 325″… and now when i here people talking about their 50″ and 60″ TV’s. I think “How can People watch a Football game on such a Small Screen?”
MATT. I know how these techs work and I prefer Plasma. Have a problem with that?
I’m confused. Is this guy writing about Plasma tv’ dying out or a company who’s product will not be made anymore. Anyway, he’s an idiot. Pioneer may not make plasma, but I know who will. PANASONIC. I believe pioneer could not compete with other plasma manufactures like Panasonic so they decided to throw in the towel. Again, he’s an idiot .
Wow, what a shitstorm. One group of idiots tearing each others throats out over LCD vs Plasma, and another group of idiots who swear that Bush/Pelosi/Obama are trying to turn everyone into socialists/zionists/[insert random simple-minded political attack here].
Seriously, this thread could give the ones over at Yahoo! a run for their money in terms of sheer stupidity. Do any of you children even have lives? Or jobs for that matter?
I’m so glad that I still own my 1986 Mitsubishi CRT television. I have a superb picture, and don’t have to worry about blur, burn-in, aging, or poor contrast. It works great with a new digital converter box, too! CRTs really are the best! I just wish that they didn’t weigh so much. If I can find an H-D CRT set, I’ll definitely go for that. After 70 years of developmenet and success, it’s a proven technology.
Hello. I repair TVs for living. I don’t own neither LCD nor plasma TVs. I have been following both LCD and plasma TV technologies, especially picture qualities with great interest. My customer always ask me which type of TV they should buy next if they had to. I always reply that I personlly like LCD TVs better because they tend to last longer. LCD TVs generate less heat and last longer. It is very very expensive to repair both LCD and Plasma TVs. To comment about picture quality, you should go to a store and take a look at 50,000 contrast ratio Samsung LCD TV. I was stunned when I first saw it on showroom. I thought it matched my 250 pounds Sony front crt projector(well known for black depth and color) in terms of picture quality. LCD TV is getting better and that is for sure.
KORBIN, What does that makes you since you read every post?
Why would anybody waste money on tv? 90% of everything on it is garbage. One third of the time is spent on commercials. For the 10% worthwhile my 19 inch cathode ray tube works just fine, cost me $25 about 10 years ago at a swap meet and will probably last another 30 years. I’m still upset with having to take $10 out of pocket to buy a digital converter box.
I GUARANTEE YOU OBAMA HAS A PLASMA, BUT HE WOULD TRY AND MAKE THE REST OF THE COUNTRY BY A LOW ENERGY LCD. Typical.
You people are sick in the head to be so emphatic about WHICH TV TECHNOLOGY IS SUPERIOR! YOU ARE ALL A BUNCH OF GEEKS, NERDS AND POLE SMOKERS WH0 NEED TO GO OUTSIDE AND RIDE YOUR BIKE OR PLAY WITH YOUR KIDS!
High-fives to Ed!
All wrong
TOSHIBA PROJECTION TV’s ARE BY FAR THE BEST. They are actually 2890p. They are classified as Highest Definition.
ya’ll need lives….”my plasma’s half life….for the informed buyer…LCD this, Plasma that….blah blah blah” Go outside and do something productive…hey I have a 24 Inch Sharp with a broken remote and guess what…there are pictures that move and sound coming from it but damn….I can’t see that drop of sweat rolling over those zits on A-Rods back…what shall I ever do, guess I’ll have to keep reading this book…which hasn’t been downloaded onto my LCD computer monitor, I couldn’t even imagine the clarity (and migranes) I could get reading the downloaded copy, those words would look like…words…at least until it goes all fuzzy from a seizure.
And how do these things disintergrate into Obama and Bush rhetoric? Really??? “I asked everyone I know and not one of them voted for Obama”…it takes more than one real person to turn the tide of an election and given the large margin Obama won by, you should perhaps pull your collective heads out of yout butt….Socialism is not coming!!! It’s impossible unless that top 1% who own 35% of the wealth (Bottom 20% get to split a whopping 15%) decide to even things up or the tired middle and lower classes decide to revolt…socialism requires a classless society…which we are EXTREMELY far from! And all of you Obama haters….things were already crap before he got elected, socialist ideals were already installed into our capitalist system(welfare, medicaid, foodstamps….TAXES!) well before Obama was even born. SO if you support the continued creation of poverty for the sake of unlimited wealth (for top 10% of US population) then keep on bitching if not, lets actually see if Obamas plan can actually pull us out of the crap he stepped into…the shifting of tax percentages in not socialism and yes, some people are going to CONTINUE receiving handouts but some of them are need it because their job is now in India…go Capitalism!
What a joke! Plazmas better! HAHAHAHA, Try running one on a computer 24/7. I use my SONY XBR-4 constantly as a computer monitor/Television/Blu-ray player hookup. NOTHING EVEN COMES Close. HAHAHAHA!!!
OR THE Radio Shack Tube model which came out in 1997. It is actually a 2690p. Also awesome.
People prefer tub tv’s cause they have no style. Yes they are good. but I dont want to have that ugly thing im my nice modern house. Face it! Will throw off my theme. yuck
This is really sad. People are giving each other wrong info about LCD, When I use to work at Best Buy, all the home theater only sold LCD saying its the best when its not. Plasma is always better then LCD. Better color and no motion blurr. Its sad to see pioneer leave. I have the PRO-111 which I am soo proud of. Hope Panasonic Keeps on making plasma and try to be like pioneer…..
OBAMA WON BY LESS THAN 4% DUMBASS. DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU TRY TO LOOK INTELLIGENT
Sony is GARBAGE. Had it, hate it. Got rid of it. Would not compare an xbr to a Panasonic.
still im not sure when will it going to end..but never come over LCD to plasma
Maybe by the time my 17-yr-old Sanyo quits working, there will be something completely new.
BTW, Obama has been in office for all of a month. It may take a little more time than that to clean up the mess it took Bush 8 years to create. It cracks me up how all the bitter idiots come crawling out of the woodwork to make every single news article on the internet somehow be about Obama. After the past 8 years, all I can say is boo-hoo – get over it already.l
Employ’s at best buy are ignorant kids. I’ll do my research and maybe go to best buy and purchase what I want not what some ignorant kid has in stock at best buy.
ohh and i made an error…the bottom 80% split that 15% graciously left to us by the top 20% of wealth owners…how silly of me
Gotta say High-Fives to Will, too. And regarding tube TVs and no style, I keep my 1986 Mitsubishi inside of a beautiful mission style cabinet (could be modern, though mission is actually a modern style from the 1910s), and the TV I display is my 1947 DeWald BT100. Nothing eeks modern more than a beauty like that, or a 1946 RCA 621TS. WOW! Attractive, and a nice picture (if you care to use a magnafying glass). Still nice, just the same. Just Google RCA 621TS and you’ll see the last word in modern. If I could afford a TRK-12, that’d be even better!
No, everyone on here does not agree Obama sucks..hater. Never amazes me how SOME people find a way to keep Obama name in their mouthes. Anyways…I own a 42″ Panasonic 1080P, and I am very happy with it’s quality. However, my brother & a friend have Samsung 61-72″ DLP, and I want to try one of those to be on the safe side. It mainly will be for my children, and the video games.
YOU gave BUSH a chance for eight years and what happen.About 5,000 of our Men and Women killed in the war,MILLIONS of people out of work,PEOPLE losing their home, and this man been in office a little over thirty day and you already talking bad about him. GIVE OBAMA A CHANCE. THING CANNOT GET ANY WORSE ,THEY WILL GET BETTER. JUST HANG IN THERE.
THE DEMOCRATS CREATED THIS RECESSION AND OBAMA HAS JUST MADE IT TEN TIMES WORSE WITH HIS SO CALLED STIMULUS PLAN. The guy above trying to sound so educated rattling off socialist percentages is a fucking retard.
Plasmas are better. Unless you compare black and white. Those TVs are the clearest because they dont have to use energy making color. They are higher resolution than 1080p. They are actually 8790p.
REALLY….. HOW MANY HAVE BEEN KILLED AT HOME AFTER 9/11. ZERO – YOU DUMBSHIT. THATS BC BUSH HAS KEPT US SAFE. THAT PUSSY OBAMA INVITES TERRORISM. HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE IS DOING IN FOREIGN AFFAIRS.
I bought 42″ Insignia plasma that cost half as much as my friends 50″ Sony Bravia LCD a year before him. His house is nicer so we watch football games at his house but the quality is not half as good. It makes me sad that I can’t see how the Browns feel just like me when they are losing. Like another post said, Plasma is going out like a 4×4 truck, I drive my car in the summer because its cheeper but I drive my truck in the winter so I can laugh at the small cars as a fly by them.
Maybe this will clear thing up for you guys. CHECK IT OUT! Panasonics Plasma to be released Spring 2009 In a class of its own. And its a Plasma!

I HAVE A 50 INCH VIZIO PLASMA, LOVE IT !!!! BEAUTIFUL PICTURE !! ITS 1 YEAR OLD. I PLAY MY PLAY STATION3.NO BURN.IT HAS AN AUTO BURN CLEANER. I HAVE A 46INCH SANYO LCD IN THE BEDROOM AND THE PICTURE DOESNT EVEN COMPARE TO MY PLASMA. ILL TAKE MY PLASMA ANY DAY OVER LCD. GO PLASMA !!!!!!!!!!!!!
REALLY….. HOW MANY HAVE BEEN KILLED AT HOME AFTER 9/11. ZERO – YOU DUMBSHIT. THATS BC BUSH HAS KEPT US SAFE. THAT PUSSY OBAMA INVITES TERRORISM. HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE IS DOING IN FOREIGN AFFAIRS MATTERS
Only one thing needs to be said. Pioneer Elite made the best damn televisions EVER!! No lcd can touch them, especially after it is calibrated to ISF standards. I love the Elite 111 so much I bought a second one to keep in the box…in case someone really needs one. Long live the black levels of the Kuro!
I should never read comments people leave. It just makes me sad… Doug: Why did you think people thought it was bad when Bush spent money? You are trying to point-out some sort of hypocrisy, but I don’t see it. Simon: How did Obama hurt the economy? It was already toast, not to mention it is the World economy that is in trouble, not just USA.
And I don’t think plasmas will be gone, just slowed.
Black and white what? I didn’t even know that they made black and white plasmas or LCDs. Black and white CRT sets are clearer because there is infinite horizontal resolution (no pixels), and the color signal is more susceptable to interference.
TYPICAL ALL OF YOU ARE OBAMA SUPPORTERS. NONE OF YOU ARE EDUCATED ENOUGH TO EVEN COMPOSE A SENTENCE SO GOD KNOWS YOU’RE NEVER GOING TO MAKE ANY MONEY. Wa Wa Wa. Save us King Obama. We’re all pussies who cant do anything for ourselves. Pay our shit. Give us homes. We can’t do it ourselves. Lazyasses and welfare bumbs support Obama. KNOW THAT. To bas most of you are to scared to admit it.
Plasmas are better.
I sell TVs everyday and feel better about selling a large
Panasonic plasma than any other set on the market. I simply show my customers the visual difference in the plasma and LCD pictures. People have money to spend and appreciate the best value for their buck. Hang in there Panasonic and Samsung, there’s
still a market for quality.
The epitome of American capitalism has written in this page. Go and do something else besides adoring your oh-so awesome television sets.
actually it was a 8.5 million difference in popular vote and the percentage difference was much closer to 7% (6.81%) than 4%…then there was the LARGE difference in electoral vote…but who’s counting?
Plasmas are okay… hear is what I don’t like about them, they get hot, use lots of energy, screen burn in, heavy, expensive , and very fragile (kids throw things)
DLP and LCD with LED light engines are the new thing! They will eventually eclipse the plasma technology because LED’s are much brighter, way more energy efficient, run much cooler, and have a great response time so don’t tell me that plasma is better, okay maybe at this current point in time is might be but down the road a few years it will be views as an energy hog!
I am predicting that that future smart phone such as the I-phone and it counter parts will implement LED’s because what is the one thing these great phones lack…. Yep battery life… the instinct from sprint is horrible on batteries… I have a Samsung DLP LED and I couldn’t be happier and its even a first generation… The picture is only slightly less bright then an LCD or plasma but not a real problem.
LED’s are the future plan and simple… they already have them in laptops and it has dramatically increased battery life!
Oops. It labels BELOW, so that was to Mike, not Doug, and Simon SHOULD get a comment, but that was to debbie S, who it turns-out was not who I was thinking of. Her comment was sarcastic and I’m not looking through all those comments again to find who I was thinking about.
Black and White CRT is SIMPLY the best. Clearest picture too. Wear 3D glasses and you will have the best color picture ever. Way better than any plasma or LCD.
percentages are simply percentages, they have no bias Thomas…jackass, there now I sould more like you, feel better?
Well, to me it doesnt matter really. I had my plasma stolen last year, and now I am too broke to buy a new one. I had to settle on a 27′ Zenith tube style (used even). Yup, I would love to own a 32′ whatever flat screen t.v, I wasted a grand 2 years ago for mine. But, I am not crying. I feel luck enough I am working, living, and I dont spend enough time in front of my t.v. to know hardly what the brand is, not alone it’s size.
MOST OF US DONT COUNT THE DUPLICATE VOTES RENDERED BY ACORN AND SIMILAR GROUPS SUPPORTED BY OBAMA. 4%.
Why do you want a brighter tv? Brightnes does not make a better picture. Contras ratio does and Plasmas have the edge on that. Luke C. works at best buy.
Technology comes and goes. Soon there will be a tv better than plasma and LCD. I can’t wait!
My parents have 2 Sony LCD TV’s and when they come to my house and view my Panasonic plasma set they can definitely tell the difference. The clarity of the HD plasma set is so much better…my dad is so trained to sit in front of his LCD set, he forgets he can sit anywhere in our familiy room and see the same clarity and quality with our plasma TV. I love my Panasonic plasma and would buy another one just to have to avoid having to buy an LCD TV. I have 5 televisions and if I had the room would do that just to have plasma. I hope Panasonic continues to manufacture them.
Johnny, HD was beat out by Bluray–HD movies are nearly obsolete.
Monkey, I’m glad you like your LCD, there aren’t many differences and the LCD does use less energy but Plasma colors are definitely brighter. Yes, I can tell the difference and that doesn’t make me a loser it means I have an eye for detail. I have a plasma and didn’t spend 10,000 on it, the prices are actually pretty comparable. Where did you come up with that figure? Based on your ignorant post I’d say working in the TV industry equivalates to “stock boy” at Circuit City.
Carla, not sure what geek you’ve been talking to but plasma isn’t a bad deal. It has a better picture and you’re right they are good for sports but what else am I gonna be watching? Why don’t you do some reading and see just how comparable the prices are between Plasma and LCD. Did it ever occur to you that the writer of this article was either 1) ignorant or 2) biased thus making this article one sided? Moving forward to HD TV more people will buy LCD’s because Plasma doesn’t come in smaller TV sizes–the average family doesn’t have a 50″.
Keith, you should go on your own words and educate yourself on investing. Without people spending $4000 on TV’s and such there wouldn’t be anything to invest in. Think before you speak!
Barney, do you think plasmas function like a computer or not? Please form your opinion. It doesn’t take a whole lot of knowledge to build a computer, in fact there are plenty of online sites that will give you a step by step process. I certainly hope that your nephew’s knowledge of computer building is better than his knowledge about TV’s. I’m glad you have passed this useless/worthless information on to your friends. I have only one thing to say–SPECULATOR! I guess you’re one of the people who complained about the rising fuel costs to. Another tragedy caused by speculators.
I noticed someone mentioned the harmful gasses from the plasma. Thought I would clarify before people started freaking out about a crazy rumor. Please see www3.gettysburg.edu/~marschal/physics/plasma/index.htm. They are using plasma in many things we use today, and plasma could be a solution to our energy problems in the future. So, although plasma TV’s use more energy than an LCD let’s not forget Plasma technology will continue to grow. Plasma is a very interesting thing–try educating yourself by looking at this website before making any uneducated stupid comments.
HERES AN IDEA – LET ONLY THOSE OF US WHO PAY TAXES VOTE. WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD WIN THEN? WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU? IF YOU CANT PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER, YOU’RE NOT AS SMART AS I THOUGHT YOU WERE
For the record, this is Thomas, and I haven’t made any political comments in this entire string. I made comments about CRT televisions and their superb performance. Owning a Zenith is nothing to complain about. Zenith still makes a fairly good product, and their radios and televisions of years past were some of the finest (especially radios from the 30s and 40s–superb–window shaking beautiful silky warm tone, and the most elegant cabinets).
The same way the Toyota Supra was discontinued or the Acura NSX because people are ignorant and didnt see quality. I guess there are more buyers for LCD which is cheaper. Same thing goes for Betamax and VHS.The format that was dropped didnt mean inferiority, it only shows consumer ignorance.
Sorry to burst everyones bubble, but I work for a medical company that has partnered with Sony, and Sony has done nothing different with their LCD screens. What they have done is bought out Olevia, bankrupted them, and them used their technology. Then, put another $500 on the price tag, because they are Sony. Sad really. I hope that plasma doesnt die, they are terrific. They are not pratical if you move alot or are not a “videophile”, but if you want to see fine technology, get a plasma, 50″, and run your PC on it. You wont regret it!
I worry that people have such lives that they can sit for hours at a time and watch TV… I have an old 65 inch wide screen, works just fine for me, and Much like the modern games of today, TVs will change so fast , that what you buy this year will be out dated in a couple months….. If companies would make something that would last , and be there for many years to come, then the back bone of this economy would return. Its so easy to make something new, get the quick buck, then move on……. Its more than just the change of the TV, its the change of an era……..
I have a 42″ HP plasma, and I absolutely love it. I won’t go so far as to say it’s better than LCD, because I’ve never owned an LCD other than my computer monitor. But I am blown away by the clarity on sports events, especially since I am an avid hockey fan, and following the puck is a dream. I was not aware of a problem using plasma at high altitude, and since I live in Denver, it could have been a negative purchase point, but overall I’m VERY happy with plasma.
It amazes me, too, that people freak out when a technology becomes or might become ‘obsolete.’ Does this really make you a loser? Does this mean that you must throw out everything you bought and buy the new thing? REALLY? Well, I download music, and I have an iPod (that I use rarely), and I also have CDs, and my biggest collection is records–thick, heavy 78 rpm recorsd from the 30s and 40s, and as obsolete and not manufactured anymore as they are, they still sound GREAT! Lots of bass and great tunes. And why should it matter that they are ‘obsolete?’ Stop freaking out people! Both LCD and Plasma are great technologies! Plasma definitely has the sharper more contrasty images, but LCD draws less power and supposedly lasts longer. Why not appreciate both technologies, make some educated decisions, and buy what you want, instead of yelling at eachother over it???
Thomas
OKAY – US BUSH SUPPORTERS HAVE TO GO TO BED NOW SINCE WE HAVE TO GET UP TO GO TO WORK IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THE WORTHLESS LEACHES WHO WORSHIP OBAMA. Goodnight to all. Hope you see the light.
Plasma is better
I love my 60″ sony SXRD plasma. It is the best tv i have ever owned and by far the best picture i have ever seen. LCD’s are nice but the ” bang for buck ” deffinately is in the favor of plasma. Sony is the best made audio and visual equipment you can ask for unless you step into a catagory of price dont matter. I have a sony surround, dvd, vcr, amp, and of course tv and have less than 5k in everything and it is the ultimate home theatre.
Stupid, pointless, boring article
Plasma is here to stay, regardless of the LCD buyers (stupid people too btw!!)
ONLY ONE COMPANY HAS BEEN MANUFACTURING ELECTRONICS FOR ALMOST A 100 YEARS-PANASONIC!
GOODNIGHT BUSH SUPPORTERS. SLEEP WELL SO THAT YOU CAN GET UP EARLY IN THE MORNING AND WHIP ALL OF YOUR MINIMUM WAGE WORKERS (AND ILLEGAL WORKERS) AND TAKE ALL THE CREDIT AND BUY YOUR MERCEDES, AND COMPLAIN THAT YOU STILL DON’T HAVE ENOUGH, AND THAT YOUR WORKERS DON’T DISERVE ANY MORE MONEY BECAUSE IT’S YOUR NAME ON THE SIGN. BRAVO!
BIG DEAL!!! I stopped watching TV years ago. Best thing I ever did. Just think, I never had a plasma TV and I don’t even miss the stupid fing thing!
the guy that said Vizio is a poor-man’s LCD. is a prick I don’t have one and I am not poor but I would never put others down for buying a cheaper TV set than me, PRICK!!!!
my apologies to Thomas
Jon….dude, get a grip…there isn’t some huge conspiracy..Obama got elected because a larger portion of America was tired of the same old crap…Obama did a hell of a job of inspiring people. I pay taxes, I work full time, and I go to school…ohh and I’m not the hardcore liberal, democrat, or socialist you think I am…in fact I support capitalism over full blown socialism, I’m just not dumb enough to think capitalism is perfect and equal for everyone.
Hose Fermosa must be from another planet if he thinks plasmas are going away. As one person commented they are the better technology, cheaper and built to out last lcd. Why in the world would they go away. Very mis-leading! I work in the industry and can tell you right now that newer techonoly is still in the works for plasma’s!
They are coming out in 150 watt plasmas!
Hose,
Do your homework first before telling the world that all plasma are going away. Pioneer may’be because they are the most expensive but not panasonic, Samsung, or LG.
I have a job, house, car and money in bank. I voted for Obama. I’m sure as hell not going to vote for some out of touch old guy and a dumb skirt(hot) but dumb! So shutup already! I want a 70″ tv. Plasma or LCD.
lcd technology on tv has not been around long enough to say it will out last a plasma. The new Gen Plasma are said to have a longer life span. How will we ever know, I know. By both and watch them at the same time all the time. Thats the true test.
And by the way, before I retire, BUSH supporters do not come out of the woodwoorks, unless you think every major businessman worth a dime comes from the woodworks. Were talking anaylists, CEOs, attorneys, accountants, doctors, small business owners and everyone else who makes this country great. Obama supporters have just started crawling out of the ghettos they come from to collect their free checks and food stamps, all the while pretending like they know something about politics.
Plasma is better
GE started in 1878
IBM started 1889
Tom Edison started his industrial research lab in 1876
Plasma TV is way ahead of its time..Broadcasting resolution now at present time is no way near the Plasma TV is capable of to emit. (Overkill).
I have my SONY 50″ PLASMA since Dec 2004..Great Pictures way better than LCD, it still rockin and Blu Ray, HDEF Channels am lovin it!!
Plasma will come back…
To all Plasma diehards, say what you want to say…you’ll own an LCD sooner or later. Think both of them as cars, a Ferrari, no that’s too much of an exaggeration…an Infiniti or a Honda?….in these troubled times, which one do you think people will buy?..both cars will bring you from point A to point B…both cars has the basic safety devices you need..and both cars has the basic necessities/luxuries you need …So?..got the logic?
You know what makes for a really big and high quality color picture with rediculously superb contrast? 16mm Kodachrome or 35mm Technicolor. Ever see a real Technicolor movie on the big screen? It is candy for the eye! Ever see a clean Kodachrome movie? Superb contrast, lifelike color, and extreme resolution! I show Kodachrome movies on my 16mm Victor Animatophone, but that’s hardly convenient or energy efficient, at over 900 watts including the amplifier (p-p 6L6G output).
gee wizz man…. all you people are sooooooo lame. plasma vs. lcd or what not……Obama or Bush did this or that….can’t you people come to realize that not two humans can see exactly the same! black level this, burn in that, life hours here, blah blah blah….is it really worth all that much more of what u work for to have a tv thats gonna be out-performed the next year anyways. I mean so what if one is better than the other, you still have to pay more to get more no matter what your buying. Every one has a tv and swears that it is better the the person who wrote prior to them….its still a tv…..they all have a rectangular screen…and all have remotes. now which one looks better, i think that depends on how much you really give a crap. Or should I say how much more are you willing to pay for that small difference everyone is crying about. yeah the author prob. wasn’t on his game on this one. all of you need to know that tv’s can only reproduce images, just like speakers can only reproduce sounds. live with it. what are you lamers gonna cry about next year…oh gas is better than diesel..oh oh no how bout xbox is better than ps…or saltwater fishing is better than fresh water fishing. get real people…all of you know that the next year always brings something better the prior regardless if is lcd or plasma or nuclear powered. this not to mention does not apply to fishing, we seem to be doing a bang up job on polluting our waters. besides if the tv was never invented the world would probably be spinning faster due to the lack of so many fat Americans slowing it down. How bout this, try to comment about something that matters like our kids future and they’re kids too…perhaps commenting on something other than a appliance treated like a luxury item. Oh btw, I have normal eyes, and my tv looks so much better than all yours. Why? because the price was awesome…so now I have $$ left over to buy food and gas…just a bit more important….just a bit though LOL
Okay, I guess you want to give 60 to 70% of you’re income to the government to be redistributed to people who dont get up until noon. If you think this is exaggeration, open up your history books and read about countries who have tried the economical plans Obama is trying to implement. Will, if you do have a job and work hard to support your family, I would think you would understand this. Im sorry if you don’t. You will see what will happen because , yes, the truth is that Obama did get elected and his plans will be implemented. Unfortunately, we will also have to live with the results of these plans.
Obama supporters are rich and poor. I know one of the richest supporters of Obama. The ones that do come out of the ghettos, though, are only there because they are honest and humble, and don’t walk all over everyone else like the corporate garbage that flocks to Bush (for only with Bush can their warped ethics be acceptable).
Great argument there, Darrell. You’re not going to vote for an old guy. Very convincing. YOU MUST BE AN OBAMA SUPPORTER. Let me guess. 10th grade education ?
Its really sad that people are gripping over the loss of plasma tv’s.. Who cares! Read a book..
A TV can insult your intelligence, but nothing rubs it in like a computer.
I supported Obama, and I’m not looking for handouts. I just want someone to end the greedy red-neck mantality that has overtaken this nation. Look at this forum of “mine’s better than your’s” asses. Shame on you!
Tell me when the last plasma’s are being sold so I can store one away so when my samsung beauty goes, I can wheel the replacement out of the garage. What a superior picture!
Hey Marvin i like cutting guys like you off on the freeway!!!
Save us King Obama. We’re all pussies who cant do anything for ourselves. Pay our shit. Give us homes. We can’t do it ourselves. Give us our free LCD tvs.
We just got the Pioneer Kuro a couple of weeks ago – it was much better than everything else. If plasmas truly go away, I’m very glad we bought it. A superb visual experience. I’d recommend it.
As an aside, why are there so many people posting political opinions here? There are other forums for you – please go there instead. I’ve been on the Internet since it was built by DARPA and it would be nice if a few of you would learn some manners.
They should have crawled out in election day! All the CEOs, lawyers blah, blah, blah! I thought this was about TVs! Your beating a dead horse. In 4 years hit the campaigne trail for who you want, for now stop crying!
plasma dying? i have a lcd with a colon and it gets graet reception, only thing is the plasma has enough energy to burn the fat off my wife’s ass. i still love to squeeze it but let’s be real, plasma vs. lcd?
HELLO….Our country is in a money crisis and some people on here talk badly about people going for cheaper television sets? I for one have a plasma television and yes they r wonderful, but I was lucky enough to have bought it back before the money was running shorter but I guess the part of them LOSING MONEY ON THE MANUFACTURING OF THESE TELEVISIONS AND PEOPLE BEING OUT OF A JOB BECAUSE THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO MAKE THEM ANYMORE ISN’T AS IMPORTANT AS THE FACT THEY WILL QUIT MAKING THE PLASMAS? Sheesh some people are just not right thats all I will say reread this and see if you get anything other than they are not going to make them anymore….: (Projected losses of $1.41 billion in 2008-09 (following a loss of $203 million in 2007-08) and a nearly 50 percent drop in operating revenue have set the scene for 10,000 jobs cuts )……But yes plasma has a better picture if anyone right now has enough money to afford it, and the LCD is the tv that hits 2nd but is more affordable especially with many people not making the money they used to so its a toss up on which really is the best the cheaper one so you have money to save or the one that costs more but the picture is better!
You people are lame with this mine is better than yours. Mine is always going to be better than your cause it’s mine. Same goes for whats yours. I cant benefit from whats not mine. Estupidos!
MINIONS……
I AM THE GREAT KING OBAMA. YOU WILL DO WHAT I SAY AND THINK WHAT I THINK.
I SAY LCD IS THE GREATER TECHNOLOGY.
CLOSE THIS POST ROOM. I HAVE SPOKEN.
Plain and simple, get a 9 series Samsung LCD (55a950) and have it calibrated. Then pair it up with a Panasonic, Onkyo, or Pioneer Blu-ray. You can’t go wrong. The best picture I have seen yet.
I just sends Mr. Obama my letter telling him that I needs a plasma tv so he remember to send enuf when my skinimous check gets wrote. My sister want one too but we can both pay half if he runs out of moneys from paying back all poor people Bush robbed their money for they house payments to give his friends and stuff.
lol that is the tipping point? i bought a plasma a year ago or so and i never once even considered buying a pioneer. talk about shitty brand. samsung or panasonic are the only way to go.
the economy is what is making them get out of the business, it has nothing to do with plasma being an inferior technology (because it isn’t). plasma screens still can be made much larger than LCD – and the blacks are better. hopefully the economy doesn’t force samsung or panasonic to do the same or then plasma would truly be screwed, and that would be a shame because i’d go plasma again if i needed a new tv.
Obama tells North Korea stop building nukes or I’ll say STOP again very forcefully…Sure this guy can fix the economy!!!
I tune my plasma to the travel channel and I’m on Vacation. Panasonic plasmas are the best. LCD (liquid crap display) Have a Sony XBR lcd and most of the pixel are dead.
Obama’s mama is the reason we are all foooqed for bringing that bastard into this world and having osama fund him to become the president and crash the plasma market… now what i have to go back to my 13″ tv
P.S. All you commenting on politics are lamer than a silent movie at a drive-in on a rainy day!
Actually Jon I said out of touch old guy! We see you didn’t mention Sarah, huh! I have a 4 year degree from U of H. I’ m looking to purchase a tv for my mediaroom is why I’m in this site! Go to sleep you Nazi.
Most of the “pixel” are dead? That must be fun to watch.
enough to keep hitting refresh.
I saw obama’s mama holding a chicken on live tv….. no wonder this guy wants to help poor ppl
LCD not far behind PLASMA I have both 52 SONY LCD BRAVIA and 46 PANASONIC VIERA PLASMA both great picture plasma darker color makes it better buy an inch burn in still there but not as long i play my games on lcd and watch my sport movies on plasma, plasma tv not going out any time soon if you see a cheap plasma then its an old tv with the burned in issue
Im a store Manager for 6 ave electronics in Northern NJ and Plasmas sell very well here, better than lcd’s. But then again, the economy is better here than most places.
Who cares?
Plasma’s dead? I don’t know. Just bought a Samsung plasma 6 months ago and it rules.
I’ve compared many plasmas to LCDs and I don’t see that much difference in quality. The plasma has slightly more vibrant colors but LCD uses much less energy and will last much longer. Don’t much care for the glare on the plasma glass screen either. When there is a problem with a plasma, most of the time it is fatal and you’re out big bucks. Seems a lot of people like plasma for sports but I don’t care about sports so I’ll take the LCD any day of the week. Well, until the OLED is perfected.
people get a life it only t.v. as for mike don’t blame it on your president and yes he is your president wheather you like it on not if you want to blame someone blame
GEORGE ( I CAN SREW YOU) BUSH OBAMA HAS TO CLEAN UP THIS MESS AND BY THE WAY I HAVE A 42′ LG and love it with that being said come together as a nation and do your part in getting this nation back on it feet REMBER UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL! THANK ABOUT IT PASS IT ON.
dlp rules all you guyus trade in you r set and get dlp cause big tvs compinsate for other things guys :^ }
Plasma is not dead, Pioneer plasmas are dead. Knew that was coming when Panasonic announced there z1 plasma.
When are you people going to learn how to spell?
This is only because most people do not realize what a good picture they are getting from a Pioneer, and how far superior it is to all other televisions, and the fact that plasmas have glare. Since Panasonic is #2 in the plasma world, and is also a LOT cheaper, Pioneer is getting the bad end of the stick. And with companies like Samsung shoveling out awesome LCDs (not that they could EVER compare to a Pioneer plasma with an amazing upconvert feature).
Yes he is the President no I don’t like it and YES he gets all the blame
it’s true…………. OLED will rule the market………………………………
George get out of town with that spelling BS. If you can’t see past that you need more than glasses. Or is it more then? Oh well I’m sure you’ll clue us in.
Actually Permalink The 42″ Mitsubishi was the largest commercially available CRT marketed to consumers.
Time to go back to the library!!!
Did my research and wasn’t duped into buying the now hyped 120hz LCDs (Plasmas have the blazing fast480 sub field drive) that are way more expensive then the Plasmas. I just bought a Samsung 50in. Plasma for $1300 online and couldn’t be happier with the picture, which I first checked out in a side by side comparison to LCDs at Best Buy. The picture, the speed, the contrast all blow away even the newest LCDs. As said in prior posts if you’re getting a TV for watching TV, Hi-def TV, gaming, sports then get a plasma otherwise keep the LCD for your computer monitor. If Plasmas are going away I’m glad I bought mine now!
This was no big news that Pioneer was leaving the plasma busines, most people who worked in consumer electronics such as Best Buy and Sears already knew this was coming. Granted it’s sad, but sounds more like Sony has put a big financial backing to have this article published just like it paid most of the motion picture industry to switch from the HD DVD format to that Sorry lesser quality BluRay. Consumers read dumb articles like this and are suckered into buying based on what they read. In fact, when I sold T.V.’s back in 2007 and 2008, 4 out of 5 customers I sold a tv’s to baught Panasonic plasmas once they were informed of the truth and saw the pictures side by side. LCD has a looong way to go before it catched up to Plasma: especially since now that the Panasonics are Energy Star Rated.
Nice try Sony, but your LCD’s still suck!!!
Who wrote this aricle? “but even” is not a correct proper transition; furthermore, it is considered wordiness–either one by itself will suffice–”moreover” would even be better.
Glancing a several paragraphs down, there is a compund predicate with “, and the” –the “the” is not needed–watch your articles!
Learn how to use transitions from one paragraph to another–and if one uses “active verbs” then that will make it so much easier.
–and who is to say that graduates with a science degree from a liberal arts is not needed, for we learn to write first then apply science later.
Benedicite!
New panasonic plasma’s have 600Hz sub-field drive. Awesome!
Sometimes, it isn’t about which technology is better…..sometimes it’s about affordability. I own a 32″ 1080P LCD TV and frankly, for $500….it’s quite simple the best thing I’ve ever bought for my PC and personal entertainment. While I am the FIRST person to drool over the 50″+ Plasmas, hey man….sometimes it’s about bang for the buck. I would hate to see plasma TV’s dissapear before I can afford one, but I can understand why it’s happening. It’s a shame really. A 60″ Plasma is surely my dream TV.
If Plasma TV screens will burn images into the screen then I would not take the chance since I fall asleep watching TV all the time. Maybe this is why LCD is out selling Plasma. Can you unburn the screen oops or do you need to get a new TV? Just curious.

I sell TV’s at the retail level and find many people buying Plasma TV’s when the price is right. On a day-to-day basis, however,I must admit that LCD is still king of the hill! The quality of LCD today is better than ever and the public is factoring in their economic situation in their buying decision. The move to digital television is causing many people to finally ditch their old 20+year old TV and make the plunge to wide screen HD televisions. And that means the sales of Blu-Ray DVD players should begin to pick up as the price of the players start dropping. It is,as they say,a sign of the times!
Panasonic will benefit from this.
ya know, strike me dead if I am wrong. Being a computer tech, I’ve noticed something scary. When big screen tv’s came along, they were more or less a rich man’s toy. Just a bling-addon. Then came along high def, a new media, large brand names put-forth, Millions of dollars into redefining it. Again, they (the tv’s) had the Bling. Everyone was opting for the normal 15-17-21 inch standard set-top. Well, they (the large brand names) were not turning a profit fast enough. On their TV’s, so they pushed congress, and gave millions of dollars in bribes to Comcast (and other Cable Providers), to push and lobby congress to go 100% HD. Well, that really killed the “Every-day” $200 TV. That every one could afford. Yet, have you seen the prices really come down? NO! I see no great “up grade” to the wide screen format. Everyone looks like they are short and fat, you do not always get an HD picture ( you have to have an HDMI Box, and HDMI Hook ups, and comcast DOES NOT HAVE AN HDMI ONLY BOX, its a PVR and they charge you for it if you want it.) HDMI CORDS are $60-$200. DVI does not carry audio, just image, and you still have to spend 30.00 on RCA’s or 40-60 for RGB (Component) cords. So, its obvious, no one wanted to pay for the TV’s so we got snowed by our Government , and forced into this option. Talk about a hard sell, if you dont have HD TV’s you dont get TV. I know its not as simple as that, but when you think about it, they are still forcing you to buy, more hardware you do not need… AND, you know, you can actually install lots of “niffy little hidden things” into a those, DV converter boxes. ALSO, you can, turn them on and off, remotely… with a signal set over the cable line… I don’t like where this is going. Its all about money and trust me, things are going to get really limited when it comes to tech. Just you watch and see…. give it 10 years. You sheep have been warned. AND, its NOT because of Obama… its because of the people in the back round who have, carefully spun things. Well, thats all I am going to say… BUT PEOPLE LOOK AT THE FACTS… Must we all be mindless sheep?!
Panasonic new line of LCD’s might be taking over. Watch out sony lovers!
I have been in the home entertainment industry for over 22 years. No one, including everyone responding, or the person that wrote this article. I have been interviewd by Twice magazine(October 2000), Fortune Magazine(July 2001) and various other home entertainment magazines and newspaper articles. I will tell you a simple and true fact. Pioneer Elite is simply the best. It is a very sad time that the best in the industry has to go away for whatever reason. In my 22 years of selling tv’s I have never seen anything so impressive. To the average consumer yes the lcd’s are getting better and better. The differences are getting less and less. But this Kuro was something special. I work in a very high end home theater showroom. Of the employees who purchased flat panels all of them have purchased plasma’s. In fact everyone purchased a Pioneer panel exept two(Panasonic). Everyone who is out there commenting just continue to enjoy whatever(Plasma or lcd)you have. Lets face it most of you are happy about whatever you have so enjoy it. The only final statement I will say is it is a very sad day when someone like Pioneer with the quality they have would go away for any reason. I own a Fujitsu, Panasonic and Elite panel and I must say the pioneer elite stands above all. In fact I have just placed another order for another 60 inch Elite. And no I dont work for Pioneer. Thank you all for listening
Own a Pioneer Elite 50″ Pro-110FD. Simply Amazing. Paid alot, but simply put the best TV experience ever. Friends who own Samsung Plasmas and Sony LCDs still beg to come to the house to watch sports and movies. Movies I recommend for visual plasma experience: Speed Racer, Matrix, Pirates of the.., Iron Man, Blade Runner. Don’t fret yet TV techies more technology is on its way. The oil company I work for purchased a 50″ monitor workstation that is 3 times 1080p and next gen. tech. Its made by a Korean Company and purchased through Landmark which is owned by Halliburton. The monitor is used to view seismic and geologic data. Almost holographic when viewing images. If the Pioneer Elite/Kuro is the standard this thing is the god of all TVs. Just wait…price tag is ~ $30K
awesome!
Sure would be unfortunate to lose the plasma market. I’ve been enjoying my Pioneer 50″ since March 2001. I paid something insane like $13K for it online when stores were selling them for 20. Back then the whole market for screens was driven by DVDs, and they still look great. But when HDTV came in for a landing I was ready. Awesome picture quality, especially for sports. I’m glad I got it then because non of us are getting those years back.
New York Times:
President Obama is benefiting from remarkably high levels of optimism and confidence among Americans about his leadership, providing him with substantial political clout as he confronts the nation’s economic challenges and opposition from nearly all Republicans in Congress, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll…..
On the economic stimulus plan, 63 percent of poll respondents said Republicans opposed the legislation for political reasons, not policy ones. Seventy-nine percent said Republicans should now be working in a bipartisan manner rather than holding fast with their policies.
I think it is ridiculous to argue over Plasmas vs. LCD’s. I feel they both have their strong and weak points. It is a matter of preference. For me a plasma would not due. I live in a home where there are many windows. Thus, the sunlight would be reflecting off the screen washing out the picture.
I use to go into two local electronics stores. I have seen LCD’s that looked great and others where the picture looked horrible. Same with plasmas. I saw two high end plasmas where the picture looked fuzzy. The people had the TV connected to a high end DVD Player and used top of the line Monster component cables. Still the picture was horrible. This was a time when they came out with a reset button on plasma TV’s that in theory would take care of any burn-in issues. The key word is THEORY.
Equally speaking, I have seen LCD’s with dead pixels coming back to the store. I was not going to take the plunge into the HDTV world until I felt comfortable in making a good investment.
I decided to buy a 46 inch Toshiba LCD and I could not be happier. If I had more money, I would have bought the 52 inch instead, but I am very thrilled with my investment.
When I compared LCD’s and plasmas side by side I could rarely see much difference. Then again, I am not a video phile.
I personally feel LCD’s have come along way. The black levels on the Toshiba are amazing. They made improvements on them so that the viewing angels are better. Mine has a refresh rate of 120 Hz so there are no blurry pictures.
For me an LCD was a wise choice and I would gladly do it again. As far as the Plasma vs. LCD War. I have better things to do then to debate which is better. Like is said, it is a matter of choice and how much money one is willing to shovel out for a HDTV.
Long Live Socialism!
Long Live Technology from JAPAN!
The demise of America is inevitable. Dumb a** government with little regulation and greedy SOB’s.
Dude! wrong forum.
After reading many of the comments on here, I wanted to clear a few things up for everyone.
1. I live in Colorado and my plasma has worked fine. In the past it has been said that over roughly 7,500-8,000 ft. Plasmas would have a shorter life span due to increased pressure. Not sure if this is truly an argument against plasma considering the small number of people this could possibly affect. 2. If you can’t see the difference between a plasma and an LCD picture, you need to see one outside a big box store. Watch any sporting event and it is clearly obvious. Not to mention the black levels are easily superior while watching movies. The difference really shows when the tvs are completely adjusted vs the default setting.
3. In order to buy an LCD with all the new tech and the best picture they offer, you better be ready to shell out a ton of money. At this point, you can get a 50″ Pioneer Kuro for the same price or less and have a superior picture.
4. Plasma has not died and OLED will not be taking over anytime in the near future. If anyone has looked at the prices for an OLED, you get a 12″ screen for $2,500 and Sony is the only one to even have one out. As long as plasma offers a better picture than LCD for a similar price, it will have a market.
5. For the people saying that power consumption is a huge factor, you either can’t afford one of these tvs or you are pushing a very weak argument. The cost difference is about $40-$50 a year and that is comparing a brand new Sony LCD to the older Pioneer Kuro.
Can someone please tell me how many generations from extinction freedom is?
Thanks.
plasma price high!
Most of the anti-Obama rants have been written by the same person who has been changing his name on each post. Ignore him and he’ll look like the flaming forum-hijacker that he is.
Plasma can out Ratio LCD any day. But LCDs are lighter and last about twice as long. I have both LCD and PLASMA. And the PLasma will GHOST the last image. But the LCD doesn’t have the contract ratio the Plasma does. I don’t think PLASMA will DIE just because one maker isn’t making TVs any more.
Thanks for the help Chas. I will do more research on the theoritical Plasma Rest Buttom. I would hate to wake up to a shadowy image of an adult movie picture on my Plazma TV screen.
I would like to comment on this one coming from 3rd world country’s point of view. The reason Plasmas are “dying” and LCD is dominating is so simple. Plasmas are a heck of a technology, that i agree on. But LCD’s are cheaper. Money makes the world go round. Its not that LCDs are better in quality.
An average Filipino earns 15,000 – 50,000 pesos a month (40+peso is to 1 dollar). Go to a mall and prices of plasmas are 150,000 – 500,000 pesos depending on its brand and size. For a normal Filipino, why buy half million pesos on a TV if you could buy 150,000 on a 2nd hand car!
To most, a flat LCD for a pc would me more than fine.
The mistake of these Plasma companies is that they provided large sizes with large prices all at once just to beat the next competitor, thus discouraging consumers to buy. (at least for those who cant afford)
If only Plasmas were introduced in smaller sizes at first and introduced the larger ones slowly, with affordable prices or some strategy like that, then most likely it would still be a hit.
The producers and distributors thought of only money and rich countries that can afford. Unlike great countries, a big percentage of the world are still poor. And so no sales.
But hey, who am i to judge. Oh yeah… I’ve got 3 TVs. All are bulky and big. And 1 LCD. haha… PovertY!! it gets to you!! haha ^_^
Just bought a 50 inch Panasonic and with the THX setting, the color is incredibly accurate. I could care less about the inpending doom of Plasma. The plasma I have now should last 10 years maybe even 15years, and by that time, plasma, possibly even LCD will be a long distant memory where Organic LEDs (OLED) will be featured on TVs that are only an inch thicksporting vivid and life like colors, with absolute black levels. Or maybe a whole new technology will develop that will eclipse all other existing technologies. Happy with what I have now, and could care less about the debate between Plasma and LCD TVs.
Do you all believe what you read? “must be true I read it someplace” As for sonny and his grammatical fixation. Shove it where the sonny don’t shine you petty little twit!
Another problem I see with buying plasma is that TV, as in cable don’t broadcast enough channels in high enough definition to make a difference. So basically its a glorified movie screen. I don’t watch enough movies to convince myself to buy one. If college football was all year long….maybe I’d buy one then.
These articles on Yahoo are getting worse everyday. They are meant strictly for the purpose of shock and awe. I own a Panasonic 42″ Plasma, I bought it for a whopping $675.00 at Circuit City because the idiots there would not sell me the Samsung floor model that was on sale. I feel that I lucked out, by far this is best TV I have owned to date. I have owned a Phillips LCD, an LG Plasma and a Olevia model before this one and could not stand watching normal TV on them. Would I like to own a 120 Hertz LCD instead? Sure. But they are currently of my price range. All I can say is that an educated consumer will buy the best product they can afford. I think we all can agree that there is always better technology around the bend. Only time will tell when, not if, Plasma goes away. But enough of these stupid doom and gloom articles with no real substance value, or adequate research on the topic.
I have a 42 inch plazma. a 40 in rca lcd. and my favorite, 54 inch LG DLP> No comparison. lg dlp is 2nd to none. and i have no reason to lie. i but my plazma years ago when it was nearly 2300! the dlp kicks its ASS> oh yeah, “ITS THE MIRRORS”
I’M GLAD THIS HAPPEN TO PIONEER!!!!!!!!!!!
I was a retailer for their line of products including plasma TV’s.
Their arrogant attitude fustrate me so much. In fact I requested a letter from Pioneer to show my customer I was an authorized retailer. THIS IS WHAT THEY TOLD ME: *** NO WAY ****** you must buy $200,000.00 or more.
I replied ” but I sell 10 TV sets every month, my customers questioned my relation with Pioneer because Pioneer never add my company name in their site.
I was very upset after I lost a customer for this incident.
I spoke with Susan Palermo, ( the southen California dealer representative, and I told her this:
WHY YOU AND PIONEER ACTS LIKE A SUPREME GOD?
mark my words : ”LCD TECHNOLOGY IS HERE” soon you will be beggin people to retail your products.
TO ALL THE ARROGANT PEOPLE FROM PIONEER…
REMEMBER MY WORDS??????????
JA JA JA JA JA JA JA JA

This is not a political forum, but I just have to add my 2 cents! The above article was about TV’s, not your damn political opionions. If you don’t like who’s running the damn country now get the hell out. If the previous administration was so wonderful, why are they considering bringing blabbering Bush and his croney up on war crimes charges? Furthermore, I think some people are forgetting that the Republicans in office now, bitching about Obama are the same ones that were in office when everything started going south to begin with. But yet these same Republicans have the nerve to stand up on national TV and dog someone out for trying to fix the mess that they (the Republicans) just brushed under the carpet. It may do you haters some good to watch the CNBC show called “HOUSE OF CARDS.” So I will say it again, IF YOU DON’T LIKE WHO’S RUNNING THE COUNTRY NOW, GET THE HELL OUT!
The latest issue of Consumer Reports has an excellent article on hi-def TVs. The article does not say one thing in favor of LCD over plasma, except price.
If price is your game, save yourself $1000 and buy a 25 inch lo-def TV with a tube. If you’re looking for quality, spend the extra $200 and buy something you’re still going to be happy with a year from now.
It’s a shame that our cheap-is-better, Walmart society is making it hard to find quality anywhere.
heck,,,, plasma, lcd or the lowly crt…. can’t find any difference…. im color-blind
People have different tastes and opinions. They might prefer plasma over LCD, or Obama over Bush. They have reasons for choosing one over the other. Whatever their reasons are, whether biased, senseless, disrespectful, or hateful, I still respect their points of view. As for my point pf view, I think plasma won’t go away as long as there is demand, and based from what I’m seeing, there is definitely demand. As for Bush or Obama, well, I agree its too early to judge Obama, but, believe it or not, I think its also too early to judge Bush. History will be the judge.
For the record I owned a 51″ hitachi HDMI rear projection televison for 4 years. It was the very first TV my husband and I purchased together, cost about $2500 brand new. It lasted all 4 years with no picture or sound issue, however if you stood at a certain angle (I.E. to the side) the picture went black. It caught glares, and hate to say it but almost every house has windows in the living room/family room or even the den, with the exeption of basements. To solve this problem, take a trip to detroit MI. You will see that most windows are boarded up, not because they are unwealthy poor folk, but because their PLASMA’S had to much glare…Point is, the glare issue can be fixed with a simple window treatment. The Burn out issue can also be fixed….stop being lazy and actually TURN THE TV OFF when not in use.
If you honestly want to compare prices between plasmas and LCD’s…The plasma is more expensive, maybe not off the shelf but watch your electricity bill rise after a few months of using one.
I think plasmas should stay in my honest opinion, not because I feel they are better as I honestly don’t care, but because I feel if they stuck around with the same old issues they had “Burn out issue” then you would atleast have a warning that your watching to much TV, and it would be better if the TV went out before your eyes did.
I also want to comment on the guy who claimed that us WIVES are to blame for plasmas or LCD’s not being sold, because we take their money…..I think you either need to divorce the one you have now and find a newer more technological model, or stop being a fucking retard and QUIT GIVING HER YOUR CARD! My husband wanted an LCD a 42″ Samsung LCD and a 36″ Samsung LCD for the bedroom….and guess what HE GOT WHAT HE WANTED! And as for me….aslong as he still “sticks” it to me with all the “new moves” he learned on that flawless TV, then I am all good!
This is a dead end argument, I seriously doubt plasma’s will die out, and each tv type will eventually increase their technologies, A Plasma is neither better nor worse than an LCD and vise versa.
As far as the political statements, I must put my 2 cents in. My husband is an Army veteran, who was seriously injured during his second tour in Iraq. We honestly have no choice but to live off of his disability from the VA, BUT that does not mean we voted Obama, and does not mean that we don’t work any harder than the rest of you to support our family. We survive on his disability alone, a measley once a month check that puts food on the table, a roof over my childrens heads, and clothes on our backs, but yet we are not on food stamps, or any other type of welfare, simply because we do not need it.
Welfare in some cases do honestly help needy people. But not the correct type of needy people as there are still millions of homeless sitting on sidewalks needing help that no one can give them. It’s not as easy as telling them to get a job, nowadays you need a home address when applying for a position for work…how do you suppose they get passed that one?
The second half of welfare goes to the greedy. Those who recieve an income and barely make it on the “charts” to revieve benefits still try to get what they think they need. In MI to revieve food stamps you must make below 38k a year, at 37k you are given a green light to get help, those people are greedy and unworthy of government help.
My husband makes way below the reccomended yearly income on the welfare chart. We own a nice house, 2 large breed dogs, 4 cats, and 3 children with another on the way…and I do not work due to a serious medical condition called preeclampsia(only happens with pregnancy) and we still make ends meet.
So all the trash talk about people living off the government and welfare should really be thought through before stated. Half of the men and women who fight or have fought for YOUR country are on disability, and not because they choose to.
Plasma will always rules. LCD on the other hand is cheap way to get big screen tv. Plasma is like a high end for tv.It has theirs own customer. I experience all type LCD and Plasma and the result was to difference. Plasma give better contras and more 3d image. Plasma production can’t stop. just imagine, all the cars same but why same people still buying BMW or Mercedes? Same goes to Plasma. Think bout it! Cheers..
Since a few people are sending double messages from some hiddn pain they can do nothing about…..here’s mine;
1. I believe the company is crying wolf, they are not stupid – there’s big benefits in doing a out of business because of competion move. So, they’re just gonno sit there? Just go away? oh poor me—? They’re laughing all the way to the TRUMP-oh, sorry—Bank!
2. Leave Obama alone, let him do his thing. He can do 99 but if he don’t reach that 100, oh, he is still a black, ooops, sorry, bad man. Oh, and what mistakes is Villaigrossa making again? Oh, I’m sorry, let me stop being angry and still in shock and in disbelief and go buy a “plasma” tube and be happy that God gave me another day…..! M E S S A G E ! ! ! !
First I was wringin mad at my hubby for buying a new one of these kuron tv cuz the bank is calling about every day for being a lil late paying the last two payments, but he was knowing al along that now we can watch nice tv and the bank has no idea what he used the money for and ask just for 1 months pay for now in a week ffrom Friday.
You all should be takin whats yours back too cuz the bank is dead possum and beside they stolez the money first of all to begin with, cuz my hubbys bro do peoples taxes and he knows lots on the stuff.
dictator hussein obama is these fat spoiled brats a deficit and “korlany’s” kids are playing video games for 8 straight hours on a plasma tv. why dont you make them go outside and play a sport once and a while so i dont have to see another article about how all kids look like oompa loompas with high cholesterol. just make sure you dont keep score, it might hurt their self esteem
oops. supposed to read obama is worried about leaving our kids a deficit…..
Ya if this does happen it is a bad day for anyone who is looking for the best of the best. LCD’s are still a far way away to get to the performance of plasma’s. I was lucky enough to get the Pioneer elite pro 150fd. This model is the 06-07 model with all the cards and features. The 08-09 new model has a better processor but Pioneer decided to scale down the model to help with the sales of there flag ship. MSRP was 6999 for the 150fd and now its 4999 for the 151fd.
But this set is by far bad ass to all TV’s out there. If it does go under because of the economy then spend the money on these elite’s and be glad that you had the opertunity to have one of these. My neighbor has a LCD 120hz refresh rate etc and he hates the fact that the Super Bowl looked way better at my house and the fact that the Pioneer elite bdp 09fd blu ray player kicks his Sony combo of ex 5000 blu ray with his xbr crap lcd Sony.
Bottom line is if you are in the market to get a TV spend the money on something that is worth the your hard earned money and you will be happy with. But there is no doubt that Plasmas look better.
Long live the “Kuro”. As a former CE salesperson, I marveled at the quality of the display. In fact, we all did at our store. It was our best display, the one we would bring customers to first. We had a staff that knew it’s stuff and we could paint a convincing story for owning the “Kuro”, but the conversion rate was terribly. For years I’ve heard customers repeat the rumors they’ve heard about plasmas. Leaking gas, eats too much electricity, etc. Maybe that was the “fifth column” in the war with LCD. Rumour mills.
Maybe it was the price (even though we were an upscale company).
I’d end up selling the Sony XBR to them, 10 to 1, every time!
Long live the “Kuro”
Hi everyone. I purchased the Samsung LCD and it is nice in the very light great room on the south side of our house. The plasma we had there was just too dark. When sports are on and they pan the footfall field there is a very big issue with this. It almost makes you sick and I bought the upgrade $4000 model with high refresh rates. But besides the panning issue the thing is nice ……the Black Light feature works awesome and it really is bright.
As far as Obama and McCain I think it really doesn’t matter who was in office the last 8 years we would still be in this mess. Just about every country is in the same mess and they do not have McCain. That in mind I will say I think McCain where he went wrong is in his lack of obtaining other support around the world. I have no idea why anyone would think that we are headed towards a socialist economy because of republican/democrat issues……there are too many checks and balances just won’t ever happen. Now look at California….that to me is more socialist…..but it is just due to overpopulation and inevitable that the more people you have the more restrictions you need……take advice from china and see what can happen with too many people….one kid laws…etc….anyway I am tired of typing see ya….
LCD can’t even come close to plasma. I recently bought a 50 in Samsung Plasma and the picture blows away all of the LCD I have seen. If I had a choice it will always be Plasma.
Bye plasma, bye!!!
Plasma is NOT dying out! Pioneer plasmas are dying out due to the fact that they can’t compete with Panasonic. Panasonic is making the best Plasma Dollar For Dollar in March 2009 Panasonic will launch the best LCD tv’s on the market. Go Panasonic!
It is sad that some people believe LCD are superior than Plasmas. I am an audiophile and love watching hi-def and, there is no way for me to prefer an LCD over A Plasma. It is regrettable that this economy is forcing people to return to the STONE AGE. I own one and, I will buy a bigger one right away—I do not want to go back to use bow and arrows.
Smart people buy Plasma. Bye…!
The Plasma have better picture than the LCD but LCD is much better in shipment for it can be shipped on its side or any angle and that it is lighter than the Plasma. The plasma on the other side can only be shipped on the upward position which is a hazzle to any business company shipping plasma. I pick up mine and i told them to lay it down on my Sienna.I was told that it can’t be layed on its side and that it had to be transported in upward position, so i got me a pick up. I had my Plasma 3 years ago and still have quality picture than my LCD TV.
Thanks to the cheap crap Samsung and LG make that Americans seemed to love to much. Americans are settling for cheaper and crappier products each year. You can’t compete when your competitor sells crap for cheap in disguise of quality Japanese products.
Samsung is actually a Japanese product assembled in Mexico. Same parts produced in Japan and other places, just put together in Mexico since labor is cheaper there. Panasonic is also another Asian company who assembles their tv’s in Mexico as well. That is why the tv’s cost less because the cost of labor is cheaper. Learn the facts!
I read this a few weeks ago on http://www.hdtvlounge.net/pioneer/exit-tv-business/ .
It’s a big shame indeed, if you look at any of the HDTV reviews out there, the Kuro always got some of the highest ratings. For sure the very best plasma.
I was planning on owning one of them, one of these days..
What the frik does obama and bush have to do with the fracking TV industries!?! seriously people get lives. Also I would like to point out that the type of television really does not matter as everyone’s eyes and therefore preferences are different. The economy is in bad shape anyways I bid you ado
I like plasma. I thought they would outsell the LCD sets. The picture quality is very good. Bright and virbant colors.
“Samsung is actually a Japanese product assembled in Mexico.”
Samsung is actually a Korean product, guys.
“Samsung is actually a Japanese product assembled in Mexico.”
Yes, Samsung is a Korean product, I think.
LCDs are brighter especially at the store display. Of course, casual consumers (which are the masses) would pick the one with the brighter picture. Also salesmen bring up burn-in and energy efficiency issues with plasmas, plus they are thicker and heavier. Why do salespeople do this? Well because there is higher mark-up for LCDs. LCD has better marketing so it killed PDP despite being the better technology. Just like VHS did with Betamax.
Sony used to be the best maker of CRT, then PDP, now LCD. Pioneer is gone and we hope that Panasonic continues Pioneer’s Kuro with their 10g panels, that is if Pioneer license their Kuro technology.
This is very sad. I purchased a Pioneer Plasma about 18 months ago, one of the first KURO units. It’s the best TV available and it will be maybe 3 years before anyone makes a comparable unit. Now all that will be available is mediocre TVs! Pioneer should pursue the professional HDTV and film market, that is were people are willing to spend a little extra for the best.
My name is Barack Obama. You can thank me for ruining the economy.
Thanks – Africa!
I have owned 7-8 differant HD tvs over the last couple years. I really like plasma. I own a 58″ 750u Panny and the picture quality is great. I then bought a 46″ Samsung for the bedroom and it looked great when I was watching candy comercials. But normal tv like Heros, Terminator Series and Dark Knight movie looked HORRIBLE on LCD. Great for PS3 games or computer. But if you want to watch TV??? PLASMA all the way !!! LCD also has a terrible angle viewing. Very washed out unless your directly infront of the beast. LCD reminds me of a cheap projection that takes up less space. REALLY !
Thank for shareing, great content..
I read on a hifi site that pioneer might be getting back into the tv market in 2010. “we will be getting back to the black” Quote from the president now what can that only mean?
Apparently since the market is slowly getting better we might see the 10G kuro. I cant rememebr the site but the site reviews audio and video products.
truthfully, ir epair televisions and i will tell you, there is not much better than hitachi for plasmas in the past… almost none got repaired because they stood the test of time… amazingly “cool” pcb’s…
Its a great TV. Bought one for my parents bedroom for fathers day.
I can’t say that plasma is better than LCD… Life time of plasma is less than lsd. we need to switch to led panels :)
My Sony Trinitron is 13-14 years-old, perfect picture still, but I’m getting jealous of these big-screen flat-TV’s we have today.
So… been checking ‘the scene’ re: flatscreen-TV’s, speaking to experts, engineers, old TV repairmen.
One engineer still uses one of the last Sony Trinitron CRT’s as a reference. Result? Only plasma comes close to the best CRT ever sold.
“Forget the numbers, look at the picture. Not a few of the numbers touted by sales-folk and the brochures are too slight for the human eye and brain to see. That 42″ plasma with ‘only’ 720 resolution in the vertical-plane you are undecided about? At 3 metres viewing-distance, at your age, you physically can’t see the difference to a 1080 HD resolution whilst watching TV, you’ll likely only notice a slight difference if you run a blueray DVD. It is NOT worth paying twice the price for that slight, occasional, difference a genuine HD TV will give you. CRT’s disappeared because they couldn’t physically make the ever-bigger screens the market demanded, not because the picture quality was inferior to plasma and LCD. I’d just love to see someone develop a new CRT screen using the technology we have today, laser-etching the mask on the screen, for example, I’m sure we could make higher-than HD-standard resolution 16:9 widescreens in glass, albeit only in small-screen format, with a dozen laser-guns each lighting-up a segment of the screen, allowing us to make a screen almost as a flat as we now have, maybe we could go as far as 600Hz refresh – it depends on how fast each ‘colour-spot’ can lose it’s glow and go dark again. NO plasma or LCD would get close! Plasma is superior to LCD, even a LED one, don’t believe the plasma is on the way out, that’s sales-hype, there are new plasma ‘bulbs’ being developed, brighter, faster, and using less current to drive them. Over 40″ even LED-LCD’s use nearly as much current as a good plasma, the backlighting current goes up exponentionally for every inch of screen, not linearly. If these new plasmas DO use less current than before the large-screen LCD can be the one that disappears from the stores, NOT the plasmas! But whatever type you buy use good connections, peripherals (VCR/DVD/cables/aerials) the adage is ‘crap in-crap out’.”
So, I might be buying that Panasonic TX-P42X10Y after all. The cost of the doubled-power consumption can be allayed by switching-off at the main plug ever night, to save the 43W all my units on standby are costing me, and defrosting the fridge twice as often.
My Samsung 26 inch CRT television has a picture better than a LCD or Plasma.
Samsung Internet@TV has web TV widgets from Yahoo, Flicker, Ebay and others to entertain, inform and connect you to specially designed web content right on your LED TV.
