LG-YouTube Deal: A Client?
LG Electronics announced today it had signed an agreement to ease use of YouTube on its handsets. “For the first time, LG customers will be able to film, upload and view videos on YouTube using their mobile phone just as they would be able to from their home computer,” said Skott Ahn, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, in a press release.
YouTube already accepts mobile uploads via MMS (see directions), and in June launched a dedicated YouTube mobile site. That leaves room for two key improvements — uploads via a dedicated app, and viewing of the entire YouTube website over a phone, rather than just limited selections.
The LG announcement doesn’t really specify either of these improvements — it does not specify much of anything. We have contacted LG and YouTube PR to ask for clarification. YouTube says a statement is coming.
The iPhone already features an Apple-designed application that wirelessly streams YouTube’s content. At the CTIA conference when we first got wind of YouTube’s mobile service, designed to improve on a one-year exclusive agreement with Verizon Wireless that expired in June, a YouTube rep had not denied that a mobile YouTube client was a possibility.

It’s probably just .3gp or H264 support on a phone, nothing special.
The question should be to Google as to how soon they plan to have a H264 and 3GP encode of every single video. And if when they process the h264 and 3gp version they base it on the originally uploaded file or if they re-encode the already low quality Flash video versions. Hopefully Youtube has kept the original native formats to all millions of video files that people have uploaded, cause if they have deleted the files then H264 amd 3gp encodings will be of lower quality.
