I just recieved a letter today for torrenting a movie , they want a total of 950€ including fees, what can I do , do U have to pay it? Can someone help me? Thanks.

In the headline and early in the story, the author refers to P2P lawsuits. A tiny number of lawsuits are actually filed in these cases. This is all about the threat of a lawsuit, or what some might call extortion.

I also got such a letter from a law firm for torrenting a movie somewhen last year. They were pretty greedy an asked for 1200€, so of course I did not pay.

But where did I go for the needed paperwork? Another law firm that specializes in defending people like me.

Indeed lawyers always win. :D

The "Abmahnung"-system in Germany is flawed. It's more or less meant as a warning letter and the money only compensation for the work involved to warn the offender. Combined with a legal loophole to get names and addresses belonging to IPs from ISPs it is a very shady goldmine that works more on shock effect than on a solid law basis.

Only good thing is that rights holders will also try to avoid going to court to not risk this practice.
